justdelete.me's Introduction

JustDelete.me

A directory of direct links to delete your account from web services.

Deployment status from DeployBot

#Contributing

The sites, urls and additional notes are stored in sites.json. If you want to add a site to the list you'll need the following information:

  • name: The name of the service.
  • url: The url of the account-deletion page. If no such page exists, the url should be a contact or help page explaining the process of account deletion.
  • difficulty: This is an indicator used on the site to determine the difficulty of account deletion:
    • easy: Sites with a simple process such as a 'delete account' button
    • medium: Sites that do allow account deletion but require you to perform additional steps
    • hard: Sites that require you to contact customer services or those that don't allow automatic or easy account deletion
    • impossible: For sites where it's basically impossible to totally delete your account, even if you contact them
  • notes: (optional) Notes will be shown when someone hovers on that service. Notes may include additional information you might need to delete your account (e.g. Skype) or consequences of deleting your account (e.g. iTunes).
  • email: (optional) If you have to send an email to a company to cancel your account, add the email address here. We'll do the rest.
  • domains: (optional) This is used by the Chrome extension

##Contribution checklist

  1. Have you updated to the latest version of the project? git pull
  2. If you have modified an existing service's difficulty, please explain why/give sources.
  3. URLs must be direct links to either deletion, or if this is not available, a relevant help article.
  4. Any steps for the process should be detailed in the notes (if necessary).
  5. Be sure to indent 4 spaces per level.
  6. Be sure to place your entry ALPHABETICALLY in the current list.
  7. Please test that your changes work validating sites.json with something like JSON Lint

##Translation

If you want to translate the site:

  1. Create a new CODE.json file in the _trans/ directory where CODE is your short country code
  2. Copy the contents of en.json to your new file
  3. Translate each line

Style guide for Spanish Translations

Use guillemets (« ») for quoting statements that the website owner has published. Try to address the user as Tú instead of Usted. Write "haz clic" (hacer clic) instead of the verb "cliquear" or "clicar" because the former is the RAE recommended way of writing it.

justdelete.me's Issues

Translation of body copy

  • Italian it
  • German de
  • French fr
  • Russian ru
  • Brazilian Portuguese pt_br
  • Spanish es

If you want to translate to one of these languages, please add all translations to definitions.json. You must do all translations for the translation to work and please use the country code (de, es, fr) for the string.

If you want to add a different language, add translations to definitions.json with the country code, submit as a pull request and I will add the necessary extra flag/code.

For translation of site notes, please see #165

Change Twitter difficult level to medium

Could Twitter difficult level be changed to medium? Cause the twitter account stay deactivated for 30 days before being entirely deleted.

Moreover, colud be this (some days before being entirely deleted) a criterion to classify a site in medium difficult level?

Please change "OpenID" to "MyOpenID"

MyOpenID is not the one-and-only (though it may seem so) provider of OpenID. All Yahoo, Google and Sourceforge (to name just 3) accounts are also OpenID endpoints as well.

A space is missing in StackOverflow

The official name for the company is Stack Exchange and similarly, the website name also has a space between Stack and Overflow.

The account deletion link is applicable to all sister sites under Stack Exchange network.

Paypal deletion is NOT easy

Change it to "Cannot be fully deleted without contacting customer-services"(red).

Newly create an account with no credit card will be locked by PayPal.
It's impossible without contacting PayPal by phone to delete it.

Some tips

Hey,
What about using gettext for translations? D:

Hugs,
Thanks.

Sites to be added

Just some sites that I've had sat around in a text file from email submissions and I haven't had time to do them yet. If anyone wants to add these, go ahead.

Change Facebook from Easy to Impossible.

It might be easy to deactivate a Facebook account, but it is impossible for it to be deleted (i.e the data being deleted). Even if you have deactivated, all the data is still there, as you can just as easily reactiavte the account, and everything will be just as it was when you left it.

Zynga link is incorrect

mailto:mailto:[email protected]?subject=Delete My Account?Subject=Account%20Deletion%20Request&body=Please%20delete%20my%20account,%20my%20username%20is%20 XXXXXX

As you see, here mailto: is rendered twice and there is a mixture of subject and Subject GET parameters. As a result, it is displayed as Delete My Account?Subject=Account Deletion Request in my Thunderbird.

Cheers.
Andrew.

Launch checklist

  • Add extra info tooltip
  • Update readme to include submission guidelines
  • Write blog post
  • Confirm Medium delete
  • Favicon
  • iOS icon
  • GoSquared
  • Google Web Master

quora is not "easy"

Quora is one of the most annoying sites to delete your account on as it requires emailing them. It should be changed to "hard" on the site

Translation doesn't work

I'm french, my system is set in french, my web browser is set in French, but when I access justdelete.me it's always in english.

Localisation

Both #144 and #148 have implemented localisations. But both use the current structure to implement and there's no way to generate statics from these implementations.

I'm going to have a think about the best way to go about this tomorrow and Saturday. If anyone has any thoughts, stick them here.

Unversal solution

Please put something like this on the website:
e.g. in Adwords you cannot delete your account but:
"If there is a feature like user management, you can invite a fake identity to have admin privileges, then log in as that fake user and revoke permission from yourself."

(if you understand Hungarian)

Enable more strings to be translated

Hello.
I would like to know if it is possible that the strings marked in red (see image) could be translated.
And also that if you could fit the string underlined in blue (see image) into one single line (the same happens with all languages except English).

Thank you.

Possibility to create "mailto:" links

Hi,
some services require an e-mail to the support, for example craigslist.
Why not create a mailto: link with all the required information and some XXXXXXX for the username?

Something like that:
mailto:[email protected]?subject=Account%20Deletion%20Request&body=Please%20delete%20my%account,%20my%20username%20is%20XXXXX

A fork to for account renaming

HI guys,

Thanks for providing justdelete.me. It is a major contribution to increasing transparency on account handling of platforms on the internet.

I was wondering what you think about a fork/sibling for account renaming.

I might not be the only one who first registers at a website with a fake name and data until knowing the platform better and deciding to provide my real data to honour the community.

However, this is not always possible and not every platform provides the feature to for instance change your login or account name.

What do you think of a fork justrename.me?

Thanks for listening!

Some "forgotten" pushes

Change Classification

Add Blue.

Blue - Delete/Destory your data COMPLETELY.
Green - Simple process(just close, your data never deleted)

Delete your ID or just disable it?

Hi

I have a question: How do you know that those website have delete your ID, not just disable your ID, and all your basic private info are still be seen by those employee?

Translation of site notes

To translate site notes, please add them to sites.json with the country code appended to notes. e.g. notes_it for Italian notes. For example:

"notes_it": "Logga il tuo account, vai su parameters, clicca Delete my account. Conferma cliccando I want to delete my account. E ancora cliccando Delete my 9GAG account."

Currently Italian, Russian, Fench and German are supported on the site but see #164 to find out about translating the site copy.
