boxparts's Introduction

Box Parts - A Simple Package Manager

Box Parts is a simple package manager. It provides a simple command line for installing a selection of curated binaries. This means installing a package is extremely fast.

Box Parts is used by Codio to provide user-installed binary packages for every Codio project.

Installation

Every Codio Box comes pre-installed with Box Parts. Just open up the terminal and access it via the parts command.

Usage

See parts help.

Package Guidelines

  • Post-installation setup tasks (e.g. creating conf file, generating empty database file) should be done in post_install method.
  • Configuration files should be placed in Path.etc (e.g. ~/.parts/etc) or Path.etc + name (e.g. ~/.parts/etc/postgresql).
  • Data files (e.g. database files) should be placed in Path.var + name (e.g. ~/.parts/var/postgresql).
  • Log files should be placed in Path.var + 'log' + "#{name}.log" (e.g. ~/.parts/var/log/postgresql.log).

Develop and Test packages

To test your boxparts packages in the Codio:

  • Clone the repo on github

  • Create a project by cloning the repo you clonned

  • Do:

    mv /home/codio/.parts/autoparts /home/codio/.parts/autoparts.orig
    ln -s /home/codio/workspace /home/codio/.parts/autoparts

Now the parts command will be related to your sources. You can add new packages to lib/autoparts/packages and install them by parts install your_package_name

Send us a PR as a package will be ready and we will upload a binary to the repo.

Build and upload binary

To compile the package run

parts install package_name --source

Create a codio package

export AUTOPARTS_DEV=1
parts archive package_name

Upload package to binary repo

s3cmd --configure
parts upload package_name

after push changed package description file to the repo to make it available for all users.
