I've found a partial solution. (I need to test it more to see if it's a complete solution - feedback is welcome.)
Once the Experiment object is created, (denoted game_exp below,) the following two lines get me what I'm looking for:
single_player = Benchmark.instantiate(alphazero_player, game_exp.gspec, game_exp.mknet(game_exp.gspec, game_exp.netparams))
move_trace = AlphaZero.play_game(game_exp.gspec, single_player)
Then I can extract the move sequence from move_trace.states for the game I'm playing.
