tree-trouble's Introduction

Tree Trouble

An interactive Swift Playground Book about Binary Search Trees, designed for the Swift Playgrounds application on the iPad. This is my personal entry for the WWDC 2017 scholarship application. The book is a simple, responsive tutorial with a game on the last page. You will help create, insert nodes, and traverse your own Binary Search Tree using the Swift coding language.

Install Instructions

To run the playground book, you will need an iPad with the Swift Playgrounds application installed.

  1. In a command line, type git clone https://github.com/joelrorseth/Tree-Trouble
  2. Open the new folder in Finder, and use Airdrop or email to transfer the Tree Trouble.playgroundbook to the iPad device. You can also upload the file to iCloud Drive or Google Drive, then choose to import from one of these services in the Swift Playgrounds application.
  3. On the iPad, open the file in Swift Playgrounds.

tree-trouble's Issues

Non-Responsive: The Playground can't be interacted with.

If I get some spare time in the next month or so, I'll likely fork and submit a PR to fix it.
(I'm guessing it's most likely just caused by something minor like a version update.)

  • But I just wanted to bring it to your attention.

After cloning and importing the repo into the current version of Swift Playgrounds:

Expected: (Interactive Playground Lesson)

Actual:

  1. Attempting to follow the instructions on the 1st lesson (per the expected flow of a playgrounds lesson),
    • ❌ The Run My Code button is disabled (greyed out && unresponsive - so you can't click it to see the 1st Tree View example)
    • ⚠️ The Speed Configuration button is also disabled
  2. I thought maybe the intro page may have been dedicated to the presenting the info and tried to click on the next chapter in the outline:
    • ❌ The outline is unresponsive. (Upon further click testing, I noticed)
    • ❌ If the blue (highlit) text is supposed to be a hyperlink, that's also unresponsive.
  3. Eventually I found that the system's next and previous (chevron buttons surrounding the title at the top) still work. I noticed the instructions at the top of the editor run off the screen on some of the chapters.
    • ❌ It does not scroll at all.
    • ❌ The Editor's textView is not selectable (you can't interact with the lesson)
