did you configured the FQDN development.diaspora.local on your host (/etc/hosts) ?

Thanks for quick answer. Yes, I did:

kirill@kirill-All-Series ~/Projects/diaspora-replica $ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1   localhost
127.0.1.1   kirill-All-Series
192.168.11.2    development.diaspora.local development
192.168.11.3    staging.diaspora.local
192.168.11.4    production.diaspora.local

I can ping the development machine by IP or hostname but vagrant/puppet scripts fail with the error above.

Probably you have an old version of Vagrant. I recommend you to install the latest version from here: http://www.vagrantup.com/downloads.html

Correct, version from the official ubuntu/mint repository is 1.4.3, after installation 1.7.2 this error disappeared. Thanks a lot for your help!
