I isolated the issue a little bit. It is connected with the Twitter gem I am using in my Rails app. If I have 0.4.3 (required by Twitter gem) installed and update to 0.4.4 then this error occurs. The problem is not likely in HTTParty itself.

I had the same problem when using ruby 1.9 with rails, see http://github.com/sandro/httparty/commit/0e9ed2108810c763235129fe167d08860cc73cfc

Switched from BlankSlate to BasicObject and only defining it if it doesn't exist for ruby 1.9 compat.
