Also, I'm curious: How did you get how to use the DocumentFile and the workarounds for Kitkat? Where did you read about it all?

getDocumentFile can return null, but you don't always check for it such as in delete:

public static boolean deleteFile(final File file) {
    // First try the normal deletion.
    if (file.delete()) {
        return true;
    }

    // Try with Storage Access Framework.
    if (SystemUtil.isAndroid5()) {
        DocumentFile document = getDocumentFile(file, false, true);
        return document.delete();
    }

...

document can be null in this case. Applies to rmdir, mkdir, renameFolder, etc.

Thanks for this excellent utility. Really took some of the pain out of this conversion. 20 years of perfectly functional file management turned into a thousand lines in one update...thanks Google!

I haven't tested other specific versions of Marshmallow, or anything below that. Nougat and up works fine.
