commoncalendar's Introduction

Hi, I'm John ๐Ÿ‘‹ (he/him)

If you want to know more (maybe too much) about me, you should check out my website for links onward, including my blog, Entropy Arbitrage. But the short version is that, in my spare time, I work on projects that amuse me, whether it's learning about some corner of technology, prototyping new ideas, or just writing out what might be useful later on down the line.

Here's a sample of topics I've been talking about, this past week or so on the blog.

Title Date
Developer Diary, World Elephant Day Mon Aug 12 2024
Open Source Characters Sun Aug 11 2024
Free Culture Book Club โ€” Viaje a la Tierra del Quebracho Sat Aug 10 2024
Toots ๐Ÿฆฃ from 08/05 to 08/09 Fri Aug 09 2024
Real Life in Star Trek, The Masterpiece Society Thu Aug 08 2024
Developer Diary, Coast Guard Day (belated) Mon Aug 05 2024
Free Culture Book Club โ€” Aether Age Codex - Helios, part 3 Sat Aug 03 2024

Feel free to suggest ideas on any project or just poke at me to say "hi." Not literally poke, though. Have some self-respect.

Here are some visualizations mostly for my purposes, which you can feel free to skip, especially the view counter that's probably mostly me making sure that I committed something.

Mostly, I just missed the streak counter from years past. I may eventually pull them from here and put them all on the dashboard page that I generate and load every morning.

And while I don't expect it, if you would like to help fund some of the time that goes to this weirdness, I won't turn away anyone who wants to...

Verify Math

Given that we recently had an array overflow on a new year, it would be a good idea to review the arithmetic used to identify the date, to make sure that it calculates the correct cycles.

Fix the Build

Since I last updated this code, Rust has changed enough that what used to be straightforward code now bombs when compiling the getopts crate with an error[E0503]: cannot use state because it was mutably borrowed. I assume that getopts needs to be changed to a different library, but haven't investigated.
