Finder Toolbar app to open the current directory in the Terminal
License: MIT License
Opens terminal, does not cd.
The current icon look very out of place on OS X Mavericks. Would you be open to an icon that looks more similar to the Finder's other toolbar buttons?
With Version 2.6, I could open an app as a directory. This no longer works in Version 3.1: it opens the enclosing folder.
Version 2.6 tested in High Sierra. Version 3.1 tested in Catalina. I haven't tested Version 3.0.
Thanks for a wonderful app! It's the first thing I install in a new Mac!
I don't why but I really can't get used to the icon updated with v2.5. So I am still using the lion version with toolbar-styled icon.
In v2.6, is there any way I can change the icon to use the toolbar-styled icon as well?
Hey. Thanks for the app. Are you going to support the app for Big Sur ?
If I happen to have an app selected, the Terminal opens to the inside of the App ("ls" reveals the "contents" directory of the app). Yes, I know that technically speaking an app "package" is a disguised directory, but I think this is not really expected behavior. If I'm in the Applications directory and happen to have an app selected, cdto should open to the Applications directory, not to the contents of the app itself.
cd-to-terminal and cd-to-iterm use the same CFBundleIdentifer although they are (now) distinct apps. this is probably a bad idea
Hi, Everyone,
Somehow in my system since longtime ago, clicking the button only open iterm2, but not "cd to" the desired directory. Always the ~ directory. Still the same on Catalina. Using iterm2 3.3.7b1, just switched to Zsh. Was the same with bash.
Thanks! Let me know if you need more info.
Question: "cd to" appears to open 2 windows, is there something I can do?
Hi
I'd like to let you know that I've created a plugin to open the current directory in SourceTree (a git gui client). https://github.com/kheyse/cdto
Maybe you could make cdto into a more general tool that can open the current directory in any application the user wishes (using some sort of config file)?
Anyway, thanks for the tool!
Only works in some folders. Most of the time immediately closes and doesn't launch
Hey, everyone interested in this project.
Since author don't have time to update this repository and in pull requests I see a lot of valuable contributions - I created a fork and merged most important PRs there (#13, #14, #21, #22), cleaned up code a bit and released latest code-signed binary. Tested on macOS 10.12 Sierra and iTerm2 3.0.10.

@jbtule thanks for your project, it is pretty awesome, feel free to merge/cherry-pick some of my commits if you'll decide to update your upstream.
If I use a stock install and I click the cdto icon, then it open a Terminal window in my current Space with the current directory, exactly as desired, but Spaces shifts focus to different Terminal window on another Space.
One can fix this by unchecking "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application" in System preferences -> Mission Control, but..
see : https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/4801/how-can-i-stop-spaces-from-switching-automatically
It might be worth mentioning this in the documentation or readme or whatever because the default behavior is quite unintuitive.
I followed all of the steps but, It's not working on macOS High Sierra.
Is it possible to create a 64-bit version for mojave/catalina users?
I can't run the app on BugSur 11.6.5 / Intel
I am willing to accept that, but the readme left the impression that even older OSses should be supported.
Hello. When I click the "cd to" icon in finder nothing happens. I dragged "cd to.app" from the iterm folder to my Applications folder, and then added it to the finder toolbar. I am using iTerm2.1, Mac OS X 10.7.5, and have downloaded the latest cdto release as of today. I also tried iTerm2.0. I can also verify that the iterm plugin was the only one when I viewed the "cd to.app" contents.
A really minor visual bug, but the current icon has a hard white background which looks very strange in darkmode. Is it possible to restore the transparent one, by chance?
Is there such an option?
is it somehow possible to attach a command to the app? i want to open current folder and run "gulp watch" on it by default. now i have to do it by hand :D
ive made a new beautiful icon

I'm setting up a new Mac laptop and I installed cd to
in my Applications folder. However, when I'm in Finder and open cd to
via Spotlight, it opens the stock Terminal app instead of iTerm. I've used it like this in the past, but can't remember if I had to do something special to get it to work.
I have set iTerm as the default terminal through its menu. I'm on OSX 10.15.1 Catalina.
Thanks!
OS X: 10.9
iTerm: 1.0.0
From the download there is a iterm directory which was used.
iTerm/cdto were put in my applications directory.
It will launch iterm buy iterm will not open a window, and if a window is already opened, that window is focused but the cd does not occur.
hello,
It's possible to run command after cdto was opened ?
i've create an Automator script, but not work :
osascript -e 'tell app "cdTo"
activate
do shell script "echo hello"
end tell'
I designed these icons for dark mode. They are designed to match the Monterey icon set. Not sure if they changed for newer platforms.
They are exported as 1024x1024 PNG, because I read that Appstore Icons require that size. Not sure if it makes any difference on higher resolutions or whatever.
To replace standard icon:
It's a good idea to have a finder window with the cdto.app positioned in the tool bar so you can see the changes in real time and check which one you like best.
Doesn't look so out of place anymore! For those of you who like it to stand out a little more, I added a white version so it is visibly distinct from the other #999999 shade icons.
Hope you like 'em!
I already have a terminal opened. From finder I am clicking the "cdto" icon. is it possible to open the current directory in the already open terminal as new tab.
I'm having trouble installing this. I did have it working, but after trying to reinstall it I cannot drag it into the Finder toolbar!
I drag from /Applications and hold Command, but it won't let me place it in the toolbar.
Any suggestions?
I'd much prefer having one app with a setting for which Terminal to open (or just "default").
Seems to recompile just fine for ARM. Can you release a new binary?
Hello
I want to open window in Warp(https://www.warp.dev/) when I click 'cdto'.
Can you tell me how do I set it up.
thank you.
The default window that opens is a tab in the ITerm2 Hotkey window if it was the last used window, this changes focus in a weird way and doesn't actually open the hotkey window into view. A new normal profile window should be created instead (or that should be an option).
Doesn't work. Silently terminates via the button and via direct launch like
~/Downloads/cdto_2_6/terminal/cd\ to.app/Contents/MacOS/cd\ to
When you open terminal, it opens two terminal windows one with root directory and the other with the current directory
/Applications/Utilities/cd\ to.app/Contents/MacOS/cd\ to ; exit;
2013-11-20 10:53:37.463 cd to[90809:507] Error loading /Applications/Utilities/cd to.app/Contents/PlugIns/terminal.bundle/Contents/MacOS/terminal: dlopen(/Applications/Utilities/cd to.app/Contents/PlugIns/terminal.bundle/Contents/MacOS/terminal, 265): no suitable image found. Did find:
/Applications/Utilities/cd to.app/Contents/PlugIns/terminal.bundle/Contents/MacOS/terminal: mach-o, but wrong architecture
logout
How can I change the default opened window profile? If I applied it in the global terminal app settings, it's still opened with the white default profile.
Thanks,
Homebrew lover
Hi,
thank you very much for this very good idea and implementation. I found it when looking for an option to get a terminal from finder window.
Unfortunately it does not run on my old Mac book:
OS: macOS High Sierra, 10.13.6
I tried running cdto 2.6 but nothing happens. I had a look to system console and found some messages:
CommCenter: #I handleLSNotitifcation_sync: Application launched:
launchdservicesd: CHECKIN:0x0-0xb53b53 23093 name.tuley.jay.cdto
cd to: AppleEvents: received mach msg which wasn't complex type as expected in getMemoryReference.
cd to: AppleEvents: received mach msg which wasn't complex type as expected in getMemoryReference.
CommCenter: #I handleLSNotitifcation_sync: Application exited:
Any idea?
Thanks in advance
Thorsten
Heya!
So I had a weird issue where the app just randomly decided to stop working one day. Clicking it does nothing.
I haven't had any major updates or anything, so I'm a bit lost for what caused this and how to fix it. I've attempted reinstalling it, to no avail.
Does anyone have any advice?
i want to open cdto with keyboard shortcut, now i've to click the icon in tastbar in Finder, is there any way?
