intel-gpu-i915-backports's Introduction

Intel® Graphics Driver Backports for Linux® OS (intel-gpu-i915-backports)

This backport provides early access of discrete GFX functionalities which are not upstreamed yet. Currently we are supporting Intel® Arc™ A-Series Graphics (Codename Alchemist) Intel® Data Center GPU Flex Series Intel® Data Center GPU Max Series

For Alchemist discrete Graphics cards, support is provided without display. This repo can be used for the features like GPU debug functionality. For normal cases, please use upstream 6.2 or later kernel version.

You can create Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS) as well as pre-compiled out-of-tree modules packages, which can be installed on supported OS distributions.

We are using backport project to generate out-of-tree i915 kernel module source codes.

This repo is a code snapshot of version of backports and does not contain individual git change history.

Out of tree kernel drivers

This repository contains the following drivers.

  1. Intel® Graphics Driver Backports(i915) - The main graphics driver (includes a compatible DRM subsystem and dmabuf if necessary)
  2. Intel® Converged Security Engine(cse) - Converged Security Engine
  3. Intel® Platform Monitoring Technology(pmt/vsec) - Intel Platform Telemetry

Dependencies

These drivers have dependency on Intel® GPU firmware and a few more kernel mode drivers may be needed based on specific use cases, platform, and distributions. The source code of additional drivers should be available at https://github.com/intel-gpu

Each project is tagged consistently, so when pulling these repos, pull the same tag.

Branch

backport/main will point to the currently supported version of Ubuntu®, SLES® 15 SP4 and Red Hat® onwards.

Product Releases:

Two types of release streams are available:

  1. Production/LTS release:
    • Use Production/LTS releases for stability. Intel recommends production streams for most uses. Features, hardware support, major OS version support, etc. available at launch remain locked. Targeted fixes for critical bugs/security issues will be provided through the lifetime of the release. New OS minor version support will be provided with updates.
  2. Rolling Stable Releases:
    • Use Rolling Stable releases for early access to new features/new hardware. Rolling updates include a mix of feature changes and bug/security fixes. Risks of new bugs and regressions are higher for rolling stable than for production. Customers must install the next release for any updates, including bug fixes. Major and minor OS version support are locked.

Active LTS/Production releases:

New kernel support like 6.1.0

Hi folks,

when will the new kernel be supported like 6.1.0?

Or do you have plan to upstream and when? Or can you provide the guide to patch the latest kernel?

Tks,

support for ubuntu 20.04

ubuntu 20.04 contains also 5.15 lts kernels, would be great to have supported also this lts distribution.

i use linux-image-5.15.0-91-lowlatency on laptop and there are aother flavors based on 5.15 lts kernel.
version of intel-i915-dkms is 1.23.6.42.230425.56+i81-1
it compiles, and loads, but i don't see in lspci additional devices corresponding to number of virtual functions:

Can't run without GuC if GuC has previously been enabled

Hello I'm a Linuxbeginner so please do say if something should be missing,
so I was using Ubuntu 22.04 with Kernel 6.07 https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v6.0.7/ using this tutorial https://bioslevel.com/articles/2022/intel-arc-dedicated-gpus-linux-kernel-60-and-latest-mesa-on-ubuntu-2204 trying to get my A380 running. I also enabled echo "options i915 enable_guc=2" > /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf for low power transcoding support,
but couldn't get ffmpeg running quiet right. Because of that I followed the tutorial from https://dgpu-docs.intel.com/installation-guides/ubuntu/ubuntu-jammy-arc.html and downgraded to 5.17.0-1019-oem accordingly. Once I made sure I was using the correct Kernel and installed all dependencies I rebooted. Upon reboot the Desktop wouldn't start. Looking at dmesg this stuck out:

I already tried alternating between "options i915 enable_guc=2" and "options i915 enable_guc=0" but this doesn't seem to solve anything. Would be glad for some help!

Flex140 DataCenter GPU not detected by driver with core i9-12900K and ubuntu 22.04.4

Hello,
i want to benchmark our Intel Flex140 Datacenter GPU card on encoding with HEVC. I installed the card in a Dell Precision 3660 (core i9-12900K), and installed latest Ubuntu 22.04.4 with kernel 5.15.

I followed the guide https://dgpu-docs.intel.com/driver/installation.html#install-steps from the ubuntu chapter.

After installing the backported i915 driver (automatic dkms driver installation), the boot process is stuck at loading the i915 driver after detecting the integrated VGA device (00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation AlderLake-S GT1 (rev 0c))
The only way found to make the boot continuing was to add i915.modeset=0 on kernel command line.
After the boot, i don't see any line in dmesg showing the driver has detected my flex card, neither xpu-smi discovery which only show the integrated card

I tryed to deactivate secureboot, but with no effects. I tryed to install unsigned kernel before installing the i915-backport-dkms driver with no effect.

Then i rebuild another branch of the driver, the backport/RELEASE_2335_23.6 one. I created a debian package from it using commands listed in README.rst and copied firmware files. This time, the boot process is not stuck but my card is still not detected.

What i am missing ?

6.1LTS Kernel version parse failed

We support and test Ubuntu 22.04 hwe kernel which has been moved to 6.2 , and we are working to add support for that.

6.1 LTS will be compliable but since Testing is not being done so we cannot commit to support 6.1 lts version.

Intel Datacenter Flex 140 + Kernel 6.5

Hi,

I am a software developer at Proxmox (Linux/KVM/Qemu based Virtualization Solution). I hope this is the correct repository, as https://github.com/intel/intel-data-center-gpu-driver-for-openshift links here regarding the Intel Datacenter GPU drivers.

I'd like to compile the drivers for an ubuntu based kernel 6.5 (since that's what we currently use) to use it for the Datacenter Flex 140 cards, but it does not compile (mostly uuid_le errors?). Is newer kernel support on the horizon/planned? Anything i can do to help for that?

If there is a better place to discsuss/ask for this, please do tell.

Thanks

make binrpm-pkg creates a RHEL style RPM when on SLES

Currently when you run make binrpm-pkg to build a binary RPM package on SLES 15 SP4 it creates a RPM in a RHEL style instead of expected SUSE style KMP based package.

If seems CUSTOM_KERN_1_VER is getting defined somewhere, when running make binrpm-pkg on SLES 15 SP4 resulting https://github.com/intel-gpu/intel-gpu-i915-backports/blob/backport/main/Makefile.backport#L426C35-L426C35 to cause a RHEL like RPM to be generated.

Currently backport-mkbinspec is called with passing an empty argument to -s.

/usr/src/intel-i915-dkms-1.23.6.24.230425.29/scripts/backport-mkbinspec -n intel-i915 -v 1.23.6.24.230425.29.5.14.21.150400.24.81 -r 1 -p opensource -k /lib/modules/5.14.21-150400.24.81-default -s "" "" > /usr/src/intel-i915-dkms-1.23.6.24.230425.29/intel-i915.spec

Testing with the following patch:

+++ Makefile.backport	2023-08-24 19:59:39.631562000 +0000

Causes the correct arguments to be passed to backport-mkbinspec like so:

i915 -> xe migration?

Hi Intel,
Are you planning to migrate current dkms i915 branch to xe, since its already part of latest linux kernel?

476.14 dkms breaks VNC connection for VMs on 5.15.0-generic-50 Ubuntu kernel

Seen on ATS-M. Did not try on Alchemist.

Consider intel/media-delivery#135 which updates DKMS and virtualization setups for ATSM from 419 to 476.14 (dkms tags). Follow setups in this order:

  1. Install Ubuntu 20.04
  2. Use passthrough setup (or SRIOV, issue is reproducible on both): https://github.com/dvrogozh/media-delivery/blob/dkms/doc/virtualization.rst
  3. Use Intel DKMS setup against 5.15.0-50 kernel: https://github.com/dvrogozh/media-delivery/blob/dkms/doc/intel-gpu-dkms.rst

You will find that VM VNC connection (which basically gives user prompt over VNC) will work with the VM till the moment when you will install Intel DKMS 476.14. As soon as you install it VNC screen will stuck somewhere in the middle of the kernel log. System will still be reachable with SSH, but VNC won't show console screen. This is regression in user experience comparing to 419 release and 5.14.0-oem-1045 kernel. Mind also, that on Ubuntu 22.04 there is no such issue if using 5.17.0-1019-oem kernel. I believe that there won't be such issue for 5.14.0-oem kernel on Ubuntu 20.04, but I did not verify that comprehensively.

Intel GPU stack in terms of media transcoding support still works fine despite of the issue (using SSH connection).

Also No Desktop on Ubuntu 22.04, maybe different

Ubuntu 22.04 5.17.0-1019-oem kernel with DG2, followed https://dgpu-docs.intel.com/installation-guides/ubuntu/ubuntu-jammy-arc.html and got no Desktop.

If you need more information please tell my how to provide it too. I'm very out of my depth here :-)
Would be glad for some help!

edit: I'm coming from #41. I also noticed that the *.bin I copied from https://github.com/intel-gpu/intel-gpu-firmware to /lib/firmware/i915 get removed after reboot. I copied them and did "sudo update-initramfs -u" after. In dmesg you can see that GuC firmware i915/dg2_guc_70.2.0.bin version 70.2 got loaded, but when I explore /lib/firmware/i915 via ssh after bootprocedure is done it's gone. Don't know if it's related.

after boot

No Desktop on Xeon Scalable 1st Gen with Ubuntu 22.04

I've built and installed the latest backport module for the Ubuntu 22.04 oem-5.17-1014 kernel and the GPU shows a splash screen and the GDM3 login screen.

But when I try to start a desktop session, it crashes and falls back to the login screen.

Here is the i915 dmesg log:

DG2 desktop hangs/crashes every few seconds/no display output

Hello,

I'm coming from #41 and #49

I would also be happy if you could refer me to a better place to get help.

I'm running Ubuntu 22.04 on 5.17.0-1019-oem using a 11400 with an active UHD730. A few days ago I added a DG2 (Arc a380) and currently have problems getting the DG2 to run. Detailed in the previous issues I overcame a few user-errors, but I still had problems. I tried to build everything from source. But it still wouldn't run. So I purged the kernel, drivers, dkms and any module leftovers I could find. I basically started fresh and did everything according to https://dgpu-docs.intel.com/installation-guides/ubuntu/ubuntu-jammy-arc.html there were no errors or similar during installation. My IGPU works fully, produces displayoutput, vainfo is good qsv encodes without any problems etc. But the dg2 seems to be crashing every few seconds when trying to output to a monitor. God, I just want this to work so badly. But enough talk:

everything via ssh from another system, if that matters

What is the latest method to dump vbios?

Hi,
I want to dump the vbios of my intel computer and I have tried the method mentioned here

However, the cat command resulting in following error:

cat: '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:02.0/rom': Input/output error

Here is another thread discussing the same problem: SpaceinvaderOne/Dump_GPU_vBIOS#3

This is the live system I used:
https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-12.5.0-amd64-gnome.iso

Here are the pci devices that I have tried:

8086:9a49 Intel Corporation Tigher Lake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] (rev 01)
8086:a780 Intel Corporation Raptor Lake-S GT1 [UHD Graphics 770] (rev 04)

Failed work arounds: disable secure boot, disable kernel lockdown, blacklist i915 driver

Error loading i915 driver (intel_vsec_register issue)

We tried various tag combinations to build and load the i915 and pmt driver. We are still seeing the issue while loading the i915 driver.
The dmesg its complaining about the Vsec.

[508819.288281] i915: Unknown symbol intel_vsec_register (err 0)

We are using RHEL 8.6 and kernel 4.18.0-372.26.1.el8_6.x86_64
More details in #73

The tag combinations we tried:
i915: RHEL86_22WW52.3_540_6379.0.13.221103.16
pmt: 22WW45.5_476.14_RHEL86

i915: RHEL86_22WW45.5_476.14_6213_220914.2 (we also tried .1 version which was released 1 day before this)
pmt: 22WW45.5_476.14_RHEL86

Support DG1 in Unraid

Any chance supporting DG1 in Unraid? I can get third party linux kernel of unraid from this repo . But I am not familiar with C. Now having trouble building the i915 backports driver. Really hope you guys can give some guidence about how to build and install this driver in unraid.

kernel crash on promox 8.1 when starting VM with a VF attached

Hi i have used the unofficial i915-dkms repo and that works fine on promox 8.1 (6.5x kernel) in windows VM

Thought i would switch over to 'official' backports driver, driver loads just fine, i see 7 VFs created.

However when i pass the vGPU through to qemu/kvm VM and start the VM i get the following bug check.

Is this a known issue? Any ideas where i should look next

Latest "intel-i915-dkms" package is not compatible with latest "intel-platform-vsec-dkms" package

The bug

I upgraded 22.04 LTS (from Intel "jammy/arc" repo) and among other things got following kernel drivers:

  • intel-i915-dkms: 0.6379.0.13.221103.11.5.17.0.1020
  • intel-platform-vsec-dkms: 2022.43
  • intel-platform-cse-dkms: 2022.46.1

However, i915 did not load on reboot due to:

# dmesg | grep i915
[ 3.439954] i915: Unknown symbol intel_vsec_register (err -2)
[ 3.503439] i915: Unknown symbol intel_vsec_register (err -2)
[ 3.675143] i915: Unknown symbol intel_vsec_register (err -2)

Although vsec module is there:

# grep vsec /proc/modules
intel_vsec 20480 0 - Live 0xffffffffc021c000

Other issues

As it seemed incompability with vsec module, I tried downgrading it, but that failed to packaging issues:

Error! DKMS tree already contains: intel-platform-vsec-dkms-2022.28
You cannot add the same module/version combo more than once.
Error! Could not locate dkms.conf file.
File: /var/lib/dkms/intel-platform-cse-dkms/2022.28/source/dkms.conf does not exist.

Note: triggering issue for above could have been FW package conflict I had earlier, which required removing intel-i915-dkms, before I could remove the conflicting FW package and re-install intel-i915-dkms with its versioned intel-fw-gpu package dependency. However, that's no excuse for DKMS packages ending in broken state.

When downgrading only cse, I saw similar warning for vsec, so both of those DKMS packages seem to have issues.

Downgrading intel-i915-dkms back to previous version did not help either.

The workaround

I got things working only by downgrading all 3 DKMS modules to their previous versions, intel-platform-vsec-dkms and intel-platform-cse-dkms to 2022.28 versions, and intel-i915-dkms to 0.6043.220805.0.5.17.0.1014+i173-1.

Notes

Besides i915 and/or vsec module sources and vsec + cse DKMS packaging needing fixing... When package upgrade results in a setup where the latest package versions obviously do not work together, there's clearly something missing from validation of package repo updates.

Can i915 support accessing another PCIe's BAR from an iGPU?

I have been trying to let iGPU access the BAR of another PCIe device (e.g. an NVMe SSD). As noticing that pin_user_pages_fast() in i915_gem_object_userptr_submit_init() only supports normal memory, I modified the code in i915_gem_gtt_prepare_pages() to directly populate the sglist by the PCIe BAR's physical addresses (as done by other PCIe P2P code https://github.com/sbates130272/io_peer_mem/blob/master/io_peer_mem.c/).

Although clCreateBuffer(..., CL_MEM_USE_HOST_PTR, mmapped_virt_addr_of_nvme_bar, ...) completes normally, the OpenCL kernel on iGPU cannot read the content of the PCIe BAR correctly, with all zeros returned.

My hardware and software environments are:
H/W: Intel i9-9900KS, iGPU: UHD Graphics 630. (with IOMMU disabled)
S/W: Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS, Linux 6.2.16.

Does any one know if it is limited by the hardware, that an iGPU cannot access a PCIe BAR, or by the software, that I missed some modifications in the i915 driver?
I failed to find a feedback channel to the original i915 repository, so I try to propose an issue here. Thanks!

Custom compiled kernel support in debian based distros.

Hello,
Not actually generic issue, but for those who compile their own kernels in debian way there is no way of installing this package at all. It seeks for CONFIG_VERSION_SIGNATURE which in my case is empty. Are you planning on adding generic dkms support without distro limitation?
Thank you.

gen12/13 igpu SR-IOV support

Building dkms from this repository and also from strongtz/i915-sriov-dkms for enable igpu SR-IOV in different reference platform, got different result under the same configuration(qemu 7.1/win10 version).

Officially intel says gen11 igpu doesn't support SR-IOV, but using this dkms it could be turned on, interesting. So I guess maybe this repository's dkms may also working on gen12/13's igpu?

Could you please help viewing igpu SR-IOV related code and let it runs properly on gen12/gen13? Thanks

i7-13700h Linux gpu Driver Support?

my laptop is Lenovo ThinkBook 14+ 2023 i7-13700h, when I install Ubuntu22.04 or LinuxMint 21.1 and update the kernel version to the latest version (5.19 and 6.1 oem version), the gpu is working but render very very slow....the mouse move so slow。。I also tried intel kernel 5.17-oem。。but unsolved。。how can I do?
(the pci code is 0xa7a0)

docs: some issues need correction

On primary readme:

[Intel® GPU firmware](https://github.com/intel-gpu/intel-gpu-i915-backports) - Firmware required by intel GPUs.

Link to FW is wrong and leads to i915-backports while should point to https://github.com/intel-gpu/intel-gpu-firmware.

On Ubuntu readme https://github.com/intel-gpu/intel-gpu-i915-backports/blob/ubuntu/main/README.md#prerequisite:

* dhelper

sudo apt install dkms make dhelper

There is no such package dhelper on Ubuntu. There is a package called debhelper. You also miss build-essential dependency.

Small BAR support?

Upstream supports small BAR but current dkms tree doesn't. Do you have plans to add support here too?

i915 driver no longer works with PMT driver

We are using the latest commit of i915, PMT (vsec) and CSE driver. Our latest build failed to load the i915 driver. After debugging , we found out that in dmesg its complaining about the Vsec.
[508819.288281] i915: Unknown symbol intel_vsec_register (err 0)
Even after loading the vsec driver, the issue continues. So it looks like i915 driver is also not compatible for RHEL. We are using 'redhat/main' branch.

GPU HANG on N5105

I have compile i915 backports on Vanilla Kernel 5.15 with patches from https://github.com/istoreos/istoreos/tree/istoreos-23.05/package/kernel/i915-oot/patches

The driver works well on N100, but in N5105, there are "GPU HANG" errors on ffmpeg video transcoding.
