Hi, I'm Ian.

And I make things for the web.

Sometimes big things - for the past four years I worked at GDS, mainly on GOV.UK.

Sometimes small things - like a Carbon Gizmo, Squarify, or any attempt to once again try and consistently blog.

I've just moved from moderately cloudy Guildford 🇬🇧 to slightly cloudy Geelong 🇦🇺.

WOFF2 font not working

The WOFF2 version of the font is failing to be decoded - probably because the WOFF2 file doesn't contain anything. This causes the WOFF version of the font to be used, so unneeded request is fired.

Options:

Remove WOFF2 to get rid of extra request
Fix WOFF2 so WOFF not required

Upgrade and fix Lighthouse bot

Lighthouse CI / LighthouseBot has made some breaking changes that cause all of the pull requests to fail - upgrade Lighthouse Bot to fix.

Needs favicon

Browsers seem to want a favicon whether or not a favicon is linked to, as a 404 error is reported in the console.

Preload font

The font is requested by the CSS, which means it's part of a request chain. Preloading it will avoid this chain.

 <link rel="preload" href="/assets/font.woff2" as="font" type="font/woff2" crossorigin>

Need to be careful about which font file to preload - could be worth just preloading woff2 and falling back to a system font if a browser doesn't support this font type.
