Great question! Toward the end of our first iteration, getting the formatting right across all different e-reader formats was a big project. I spent a long weekend fighting with the CSS for the PDF option and didn't have time left to do QA or support across epub and other formats.

If someone is able to get the book working and looking good on epub, we will happily add it to the download options on the landing page. It really just came down to a matter of volunteer time available to make it happen.

Hope this helps to clarify! We would love to offer the book in all different formats.

well, there's no css at all in the repo, can't even generate pdf.

I suggest you put the Atlas-generated epub into the repo; css can be tweaked from there

Here's the css & theme for the project: https://github.com/infoactive/data-design-theme/

you mean there's no css in the Atlas generated epubs?

No custom css, specifically. The default Atlas styling is applied to all MOBI and EPUB builds. As this isn't in keeping with the style of the web and PDF versions, we aren't currently providing downloads to these builds.

If you would like to apply our current styling to an EPUB build, the link Trina provided includes all css for the versions that we currently publish which can be drawn from. Certainly, if you would like to take that on, we would welcome it getting done sooner than later.

Is the Atlas CSS proprietary or something? The html classes it uses are not standards or anything, so moving into calibre without accompanying css would be starting from scratch and not worth it.

No, none of the CSS, etc. is proprietary. The HTML classes you are referring to are likely defined in the HTMLBook specifications. Have you looked those over yet? If not, I would suggest you do: the book's code is based on these specs.

Aaaaah, that explains it. Where do I find the Atlas css?

wetherc avatar wetherc commented on August 26, 2024

You should be able to find all of the Atlas default themes on O'Reilly Media's GH. If I remember, trade theme is the default for Atlas.

super. still, it would be helpful to have an example epub build in the repo. You can see what I've done, for example https://github.com/Gluejar/oral_literature_in_africa or https://github.com/GITenberg/Around-the-World-in-80-Days_103

Definitely agreed! It's on the to-do list, just no guarantees how long until one of us (or someone else in the community) gets around to it.
