This issue is being addressed in the 3.0 re-write. Placing the bar at the bottom in the 2.x series would require code duplication, which is something we try to avoid. Hiding it entirely was not an option for GUI oriented users. I thought of using an auto hide animation, but I like your idea of placing the bar at the bottom better. Thanks for sharing it!
On a quick note, if you disable the "In-frame prompter" and enable the "External prompter" in a computer with no second display, you will get the external prompter with no top bar to show on your laptop screen. You can then exit the prompter with the ESC key or switch to the Editor window hidden behind it by pressing Alt-Tab.
