wildfire_webmap's Issues

Peer Review - Zhi Ye

Hi Connor,

Your project is looking really good! I like how you included visualizations and images to accompany your geo-narrative. Additionally, I enjoy the interactivity that you included when clicking on fire as well as how you highlight rivers and fires throughout your map. Some constructive feedback that I have that you could improve on would be increasing the size of the font for the text on the left as it was at times difficult to read due to it being small and a suggestion could be adding other base maps to highlight the fires and rivers in your map. Overall, great job on your project, keep it up!

Project Feedback

Hey Connor,

The 2020 Oregon fires were devastating, and I thought your project did a great job doing justice to the severity of what happened. I thought that the scrolling dashboard you built was a good way to overlay information and text along with your map. My main feedback would be leaving a gap in the scrolling dashboard, allowing the user to interact with and explore the map. I thought the context, images, and descriptions of damages were all great. Thanks for sharing.

I loved the opening page with the satellite tour, and I think overlaying the map on top of the satellite image is a cool design idea. There are a lot of features that are though out well and I enjoy the popup media elements to the map. My favorite part is the before and after images. Overall this was probably the most informative map I have seen so far. One thing that could be improved is to include urban areas on the basemap, as the location of high-density population centers is very useful to know when regarding fire safety.

Hi Connor! Thank you for sharing the awesome project with us. It is really cool that you included the various forms of visual elements and interactive functions to supplement the narratives. The heat maps are well made and easy to understand. The issue I ran into when I entered the website was that I could only see half of the first heatmap. I think it probably has to do with the screen size optimization settings. The other thing I saw that could be improved is the dashboard on the left. When I scroll to the bottom half of the website, some texts began to overlap with the images. Overall, great job!

I really like your final image, very representative. I think your font size is too small, which is hard to see. And I think your map is good, but it is hard to tell the area.

I thought you had a great user experience by aligning elements to the scroll bar. I would encourage you to add a signifier on the landing page to let the user know to scroll down otherwise they might get stuck if they never think to scroll!

Your UI was well designed. The scrolling was interactive that helps the user move through each slide as each is provided with maps and a lot of text information on the left side. The project was creative and a small thing I'd do is just zoom in onto the 2 maps showing the 2 major fires you looked at when you click on them. Overall, it's a really good and well-prepared project.

I think you did an awesome job than just showing points on a map and instead of showing the issue in a narrative. I would suggest finding a way to put your risk map in an overlay to allow the viewer to dive deeper into the subject. Good job!

Hi Connor,

I really enjoyed looking thru your project. You chose a super relevant topic and your mapping techniques were rather exciting in comparison to others. I think you provided really good context for your topic, cool visuals and interesting interactive features. It was really wise to do the before/after pic. I think one thing that could be improved upon is the left hand pane with the text. The transparency coupled with the font color can make it difficult to read the text at times. Overall super cool project!

Awsome video at the beginning. Wildfire risk map really helps readers to identify where in Oregon experienced fire damage. I think it would have been nice if you could still show name of the nearby cities like Vancouver or Portland since those 3 major fires were so close to them. Other than that, I think you did really good job.

Feedback

Awesome UI! It was unique, interactive, and seemed easy to navigate. Something that could have made this an even cleaner look was maybe zooming into the map. I feel like I could see more of the base map and less of your map, deviating the focus off of it.
