While I agree about some links to posts on how to manage time with an open-source project would be nice, I disagree with what you're saying about getting real work done. As the old saying goes - a lot of littles makes a lot. A few entries in MDN and a few commits/forks to your favorite repo really go a long way, especially if you're doing that stuff frequently.

What are some of your thoughts regarding the time subject, etc? I'm interested in hearing them!

What I'm getting at here is thus: You either make the task of writing code a full-time act, as in, you make it pay the bills, and make it your livelihood, or you mistreat your passion for the subject and delegate it as a mere 'hobby'.

That's why I never liked the term 'hobbyist' hacker, because it suggests hacking is just passing the time when infact it could be so much more - e.g, your job / career / profession / etc

As regards adding things to the MDN - that is a noble act, and the importance of it must not go overlooked. But that's not being the be-all-and-end-all of web development. True WebDev is much more expansive. It spans the whole web infact...

  • Do you make podcasts discussing the subject?
  • Screencasts?
  • Gists?
  • Blog entries?
  • Blog comments?
  • Emails to others?
  • Posting it on FBook,G+,Twitter,etc?
  • Adding source code 'easter eggs' / comments
  • Lurking moar on IRC?
  • Instant messaging?
  • Word of mouth?
  • Paid Advertisements?
  • Video conferencing?
  • Teaching the subject?
  • Guest speakers etc?
  • Getting a mention in a book?

etc...

I could go on, but those should get you started...
So yeah, full-time hacker, or die...
