amd-radeon-rx-5700xt-macos-123-spoof-fix-workaround's Introduction

Spoofing the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT to the AMD Radeon Pro W5700X via DeviceProperties

This Repository contains the information necessary to spoof the

to the AMD Radeon Pro W5700X GPU

via adding in some XML property list formatted keys and strings to our OpenCore config.plist file in efforts of mitigating unwanted behaviors and performance degradation introduced by Apple in their 12.3 update of macOS. I have tested this on an XFX AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT Triple Dissipation, and can confirm that it works in both macOS Big Sur 11.6.5, and in macOS Monterey 12.3.

DISCLAIMER:

  • I am not responsible for any damages that may or may not occur to your GPU or any hardware otherwise arising from your having chosen to do the steps outlined in this GitHub repository, as this is just merely for the sake of experimentation.

UPDATE:

  • As of 12.4 the graphical issues that were introduced by Apple (or whomever for that matter have been resolved it seems, negating the absolute NEED for this, although it can still be ran.
  • I am not suggesting that anyone do this, just know that it's still possible to continue to do so.

  • One can technically omit everything occuring after the last instance of <string>ATY,Adder</string> as shown belowand it still work, but ymmv and don't forget / remember to add the appropriate closing dictionary entries:

            <key>PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x3,0x1)/Pci(0x0,0x0)/Pci(0x0,0x0)/Pci(0x0,0x0)</key>

Documentation

In order to fully utilize this method, we're going to need to apply the section of code above to the appropriate section of our config.plist which in this case will be the appropriate DeviceProperties path that is related to your GPU. (This can be found by looking up such in IORegistryExplorer, or gfxutil).

  • Upon adding everything, make sure that you place the code in appropriately, IE: making accomodations or necessary changes at the end of the code by the Delete key to make sure that everything goes into your config.plist correctly.

  • Upon restarting your machine, you should now see in all locations referencing the GPU that it has been spoofed correctly as a Radeon Pro W5700X 8GB.

NOTE:

  • It has been reported to me by someone that this made their fans stay spinning which is not technically the default behavior for these cards in macOS due to the nature of how macOS handles dGPUs and at which temperatures they decide to make fans kick in. I do not see any detriment to this on my end, however yet again YMMV and you do so at your own risk.
