Zoohackathon 2016

The National Zoo held its first ever Zoohackathon across multiple continents and countries during the weekend of October 7 - October 9. We have built a discrete reporting tool for wildlife trafficking and deforestation. The reporting tool consists of a backend written in Python and Django (see the web folder), and frontend smartwatch applications written for Android Wear (see android folder) and Apple Watch (see ios folder).

Add reports heatmap

Add an interactive heatmap of the reports using the reports API.

Add Android Wear watchface

The watchface should include a dial and a button that calls the Android app. The Android app should record the location, type of report, and time, and submit it via the API.

Port Flask code to Django using Django-Rest-Framework

DRF will auto-generate documentation for the reporting API.

Add reports map

Add dynamic map of reports so that users can visualize highly trafficked areas.

Add Apple Watch watchface

The watchface should include a dial and a button that calls the iOS application. The iOS application should record the location, type of report, and time, and submit it via the API.

Cluster markers on reports map

When there are too many reports in the same area, the last one loaded occludes the rest when zoomed out and absorbs all of the click events. In order to solve this, markers should be clustered until at the appropriate zoom level.
