Issue description:

Whenever I invoke the 'Find file' option from the GitExt menu, VS2022 almost instantly crashes. This happens both with a small solution (3 projects) as well as with a larger solution (111 projects). It happens both when VS2022 is started with elevated permissions (to debug) as well as when it is started with normal user permissions.

Three of my co-workers experience the same issue. They are working on identical workstations with (near) identical software configurations on the same type of solutions, connecting to the same Git repository.

Not sure whether this is relevant: I used the 'Customize Menu...' option under the Extensions menu to remove the checkmark for GitExt. This is needed to move the GixExt menu from the Extensions menu to its own spot in the main menu bar.
Move GitExt menu

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open VS2022 and open a solution that is located inside a Git repo.
  2. Invoke the 'Find file' option under the GitExt menu either by Alt+I and then L (keyboard shortcuts) or by clicking with the mouse.
    Invoke 'Find file'
  3. Notice how the cursor changes from an arrow to an arrow + blue spinning circle (busy indicator), almost instantly.
  4. Notice the standard Windows 'xxx has stopped working' dialog that pops up.
    VS2022 crash

Did this work in previous version of the GitExtensions plugin?

Yes, under VS2019 and with the previous version of the VSIX plugin (I have version 3.4.1.21 installed), opening the same solution/repo, etc. the 'Find file' option is working without issues.

Additional info

Please let me know if I should provide more information. If there are any logs that might be relevant. If there is any way to generate additional logging, etc. It would be great if this issue can be resolved!

Kind regards,
Wout Kroon

VSIX Browse button

I understand why the browse button opens the project path. However, I think there should be a dropdown menu option that lets you open the solution directory instead.

VSIX icons look strange

Do you want to request a feature or report a bug?

Bug.

What is the current behavior?

In VS2017 with a dark theme enabled, the VSIX icons look like this:

image

Some of them look particularly bad, such as 'clone', 'manage remotes' and 'file history'.

It could be that VS attempts to darken them automatically to match the dark theme.

Environment you encounter the issue:

  • GitExtensions version: 3.0 master from a few weeks ago
  • OS version: Windows 10, latest updates

Did this work in previous version of GitExtensions (which)?

I don't know.

GitExtensionsVSIX.Git.GitCommands.RunGit accesses ExitCode before WaitForExit

Current behaviour

GitExtensionsVSIX.Git.GitCommands.RunGit accesses Process.ExitCode before calling Process.WaitForExit.
I expect Process.ExitCode to throw an InvalidOperationException.

(RunGit is called by GetCurrentBranch only.)

Expected behaviour

Access ExitCode after the process has exited.

Context Menu "Reset File Changes" not working as expected

When using the GitExtension Visual Studio 2015 plugin the behaviour of the Context Menu is not as expected.

If you have file changes in two different files, open file A in Visual Studio Editor and right-click on file B in Solution Explorer and choose "Reset File Changes" the extension will reset the changes of file A which is opened in Visual Studio Editor and not the file changes in file B which was right-clicked.

In addition, the confirm dialog should say which file is selected to be reset.

If I 'Customize' the VS troolbar that has the Solution Configurations, Solution Platforms, and Startup Projects drop down, if I select 'Modify Selection', VS give me the option to set the Width.

add option for "folder history"

Hello,

request

In GitExtensions stand-alone application you could click on a folder, click the view history and you will be presented with folder related commits:

image

image

Using the CLI the result is achieved by executing following command: gitex filehistory XXX\Client. where the last part of the path is the folder, instead of filename.

Nothing like this is currently exists in VSIX. We have an option to select an item in solution explorer and then clicking on File history option in extension, but this will show the history of the selected file. The logic does not work for folders.

example: view file history

image

image

image

main problem showed

If you were to click on a folder and try to do the same:

image

you wouldn't event be able to check the history at all:

image

sub-problem: can't view history for top-level items

In addition to this - I can report few other issues with the extension. Seems like for solution "top-level" items it's impossible to view the history:

image

image

sub-problem: .csproj file history triggers .sln file history instead

image

The history is opened for .sln instead:

image

sub-problem: uncertain purpose of view changes function

Lastly, it is not clear what view changes function does:

image

It always shows the whole history of changes in whole repository, regardless of what item you select in solution explorer.. I propose to either remove it or rename it.

So to summarize:

  1. Please implement the folder history command. It should be applicable to "Solution", "Projects", and "folders" of projects.
  2. Fix the .csproj file history view functionality.
  3. Fix the solution's top-level items view history functionality.
  4. Rename or remove or fix view changes function depending on what it's supposed to do.

Most of the problems described here must be related to the same functionality (same CLI command, except for 4.), so I grouped them together, but if you were to select only 1 complaint from this issue - please fix the "folder history" functionality in VS :)

Thank you.

VS2019: Extremely high memory usage with v3.4.1.21

Please let me know if I do anything to provide more information about this bug. As it stands I don't know if I can e.g. force this extension to log anything for me.

Upgrading the GitExt VS2019 extension from v3.4.0.7 (the newest build on GitHub) to v3.4.1.21 (the newst build on VS Marketplace) seems to result in an extremely high memory usage of devenv.exe, circa 2GB for just the IDE loaded with no code! With a bigger solution loaded, devenv.exe easily crashes as it runs out of memory.

v3.4.0.7, IDE loaded with no code:
image

v3.4.1.21, IDE loaded with no code:
image

For all I know, it wasn't "always" like this as it seems to have worked fine for me until yesterday. To my knowledge I have not changed any settings, the last thing I did in VS before I noticed things started breaking was opening a CMake project via VS. Because I am not sure how to debug this, I do not know if this action had any relevance to the issue or not.

So far I observed this on VS16.11.2 and VS16.11.3.

This extension is not installable on any currently installed products

I get the following error when trying to install the VSIX:

"This extension is not installable on any currently installed products."

I had to rollback my VS 2019 recently because VS became unusable (it would take 15+ minutes to open a single project solution, and anything more complex just hangs indefinitely). I don't know what version I was on before VS decided to become unusable - plus I'm not even sure it's was VS's fault (definitely was MS's fault) as when I noticed the issue was after a Windows update for the .Net framework.

Anyway, I'm now on version 16.8.0 because I just picked an older version at random cause I wasn't sure rolling back would even work, nor what version would. However 16.8.0 does work. I've reinstalled all my extensions but this one. This one is the only one that is giving me grief about reinstalling.

I looked at the installer log, and supported version is 'Version : [14.0,18.0)', so it should be allowed... I'm inclined to believe it's still MS's fault that I can't install your extension, but seeing as all other extensions I use were able to be installed, I thought I'd at least post the log here, and see if there is anything I can do to fix this? I'm going to and jump a minor version or two forward and see if that helps, but it's such a tedious process to do that with VS.

GitExtentions toolbar is not show in Visual Studio after installation

There are a couple of issues with the default settings (in my experience)

  1. After installing gitExtentions vsix - the GitExtentions toolbar does NOT become visible by default
  2. In almost all cases that I did enable it manually, by right clicking on the toolbars and checking the GitExtentios, I do get a duplicated view (with all the buttons being show 2-wice)
  3. (not sure if this is for everybody, but I need to enable this toolbar manually every time i start my VS :(

If the current behavior is a bug, please provide the steps to reproduce and if possible a minimal demo of the problem.

What is the expected behavior?
SSMS uses the isolated shell, which is a VS shell, to show sql server management tools. I don't see why we can't make visix for SSMS also that would allow us to commit sql scripts.

Message box "The current directory is not a valid git repository" when using Git Extensions via Visual Studio Plugin

If you try to open Git Extensions via the Visual Studio Plugin (e.g. to commit, view file history, etc.) you always get this error message if the current file is in a subdirectory of the git repository.

So if your git repository (with the solution) is in "m:" and the current file is in "m:\io", Git Extensions are opened with "M:\io" as the current directory which leads to the error message.

You have to go up the directory tree until you find the ".git" folder to determine the repository root. This does not seem to happen.

Occurs in Visual Studio 2013 and Visual Studio 2015 with Git Extensions 2.49.

Visual Studio 2019 - Extension - None of the functions are working

I have not worked in VS in a while. When I opened it up today, none of the GitEx functions are working - not from the toolbar menu, not from the right-click menus, nothing. No error or messages, just nothing happens. Uninstalled and reinstalled the GitEx extension, but still does not work.
