First, when you say that Omeka might be right if you want to relate items, I'd say that's true to an extent, but is limited. The Item Relations plugin can start to build more complex relationships between items, and the Search By Metadata plugin can do a simple job of navigating to similar items. But for really complex relations--the kind that lead to those complex queries you mention later--it poops out. Something like Drupal handles that much better (at the cost of lots of up-front development time)

Second, I love that you are pushing the question of "What is an 'Item', anyway?" with the Octavia example. By design, Omeka leaves that very open, but it does prompt those kinds of conceptually tricky questions, and as you are pointing out, a different interpretation of 'Item' can lead to a different interpretation of the DC terms. The answer to that question about the Octavia item immediately makes the data in 'format' and 'creator' completely different, so it's great to see you pushing those issues!
