When you adjust some properties of a layer, it can trigger relayout. I would check for any implementations of layoutSubviews or viewDidLayoutSubviews that might cause a performance issue if they're run on each step of the animation. (With autolayout enabled, some of that may be handled by the system instead.)

@grp was right, that did cause the lag for me, because I was redrawing some views when layoutSubviews was getting called. Thanks for the quick answer, really helped me! :)
