puppet-icinga's Introduction

Puppet module: icinga

DEPRECATION NOTICE

This module is no more actively maintained and will hardly be updated.

Please find an alternative module from other authors or consider Tiny Puppet as replacement.

If you want to maintain this module, contact Alessandro Franceschi

This is a Puppet module for icinga based on the second generation layout ("NextGen") of Example42 Puppet Modules.

Made by Alessandro Franceschi / Lab42

Official site: http://www.example42.com

Official git repository: http://github.com/example42/puppet-icinga

This module requires functions provided by the Example42 Puppi module (you need it even if you don't use and install Puppi)

For detailed info about the logic and usage patterns of Example42 modules check the DOCS directory on Example42 main modules set.

USAGE - Basic management

  • Install icinga with default settings

      class { 'icinga': }

  • Install a specific version of icinga package

      class { 'icinga':
        version => '1.0.1',
      }

  • Disable icinga service.

      class { 'icinga':
        disable => true
      }

  • Remove icinga package

      class { 'icinga':
        absent => true
      }

  • Enable auditing without without making changes on existing icinga configuration files

      class { 'icinga':
        audit_only => true
      }

  • Enable icinga-web

      class { '::icinga':
        enable_idoutils           => true,
        enable_icingaweb          => true,
        manage_repos              => true,
        enable_debian_repo_legacy => false,
      }

    The last option exists for legacy reasons only.

USAGE - Overrides and Customizations

  • Use custom sources for main config file

      class { 'icinga':
        source => [ "puppet:///modules/lab42/icinga/icinga.conf-${hostname}" , "puppet:///modules/lab42/icinga/icinga.conf" ],
      }

  • Use custom source directory for the whole configuration dir

      class { 'icinga':
        source_dir       => 'puppet:///modules/lab42/icinga/conf/',
        source_dir_purge => false, # Set to true to purge any existing file not present in $source_dir
      }

  • Use custom template for main config file. Note that template and source arguments are alternative.

      class { 'icinga':
        template => 'example42/icinga/icinga.conf.erb',
      }

  • Automatically include a custom subclass

      class { 'icinga':
        my_class => 'icinga::example42',
      }

USAGE - Special top scope variables

Some special variables can be set at top scope to manage some module's behaviours on all the monitored hosts:

  • Optional baseservices template

      $icinga_baseservices_template = 'example42/icinga/baseservices.erb'

USAGE - Example42 extensions management

  • Activate puppi (recommended, but disabled by default)

      class { 'icinga':
        puppi    => true,
      }

  • Activate puppi and use a custom puppi_helper template (to be provided separately with a puppi::helper define ) to customize the output of puppi commands

      class { 'icinga':
        puppi        => true,
        puppi_helper => 'myhelper',
      }

  • Activate automatic monitoring (recommended, but disabled by default). This option requires the usage of Example42 monitor and relevant monitor tools modules

      class { 'icinga':
        monitor      => true,
        monitor_tool => [ 'icinga' , 'monit' , 'munin' ],
      }

  • Activate automatic firewalling. This option requires the usage of Example42 firewall and relevant firewall tools modules

      class { 'icinga':
        firewall      => true,
        firewall_tool => 'iptables',
        firewall_src  => '10.42.0.0/24',
        firewall_dst  => $ipaddress_eth0,
      }

puppet-icinga's Issues

'icinga::version' when no version is specified.

The variable 'icinga::version' used in icinga.cfg.erb for conditioning, does not work properly when version is not specified.

Should a fact be created on the client to pull the installed version and base the conditioning on that fact result?

grouplogic. How to manage servicegroups

I'm having difficulty understanding whether the Icinga / Nagios modules manage service groups. I'm toying with hacking it to use a top-scope array where a module name gets a group name via magictag, so bacula services get "backup", but it seems a bit clunky.

Any thoughts?

Difference with Nagios?

Hi there,

I just started implemented Icinga using the Nagios module last week (only to find this module just now...). Could you perhaps let me know (and document it, saves you a next time ;)) if there are any features in the nagios module that are not in the icinga module, or vice versa?

Tnx!

Hostgroup 'all' missing

Hi,

I'm trying to switch our Icinga setup from the Nagios module, to the Icinga one. This is not so much of a problem, except for 1 hostgroup issue. When I run icinga without any additional configuration (merely including the icinga class in a node definition):

Error: Could not find any hostgroup matching 'all' (config file '/etc/icinga/auto.d/hosts/puppetmaster01.dev.host.name.cfg', starting on line 3)

Can you provide any insight into a solution?

"Connection refused by host"

All of this on Debian Squeeze.

After installing icinga server with

class { 'icinga':
  enable_icingaweb => true,
  htpasswdfile => '/etc/lighttpd/icinga.users',
  template_htpasswdfile => '/etc/puppet/files/lighttpd/icinga.users',
}

and including in all my node configs

include icinga::target

I always get "Connection refused by host" errors in icinga's (classic) webinterface. I noticed that the nrpe package doesn't get installed on the nodes.

Is this a bug, or is it a misconception on my part? What am I doing wrong?

postgresql support

I want support pgsql with enable_idoutils => true.
Currently only mysql supported.

Dependency issue

Hi,

I'm trying to enable icinga-web. However I get the following dpkg error:
