After installing the module using 'sudo python setup.py install', I opened the python command-line interpreter and tried 'import gensafeprime'. I got this error:

ImportError: /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gensafeprime.so: undefined symbol: CRYPTO_free

I have implemented a python3 version of gensafeprime at https://github.com/Sakartu/gensafeprime, but am unsure what the procedures are to get this into pypi or create a version that works in both python versions.

setup.py produces a bunch of warnings regarding the depreciated function BN_generate_prime() (replaced by BN_generate_prime_ex()) but compiles successful.
But after import in python the following Error is thrown when calling gensafeprime.generate(b):

it turns out, that (whyever) OPENSSL_free function needs the
<openssl/conf.h>
to be linked to work properly with
MaxOSX 10.8.4. with preinstalled openSSL v.0.9.8

Thus please consider to add the above header to src/primemodule.c
