This is wonderful work, very helpful and I appreciate you contributing it! Exactly what I was looking for.
I've had an issue when sending events generated by your input plugin to a GELF output (so I can send them to Graylog). These events are missing the "message" field, which creates an error (and the event is not generated) when using GELF.

The workaround I used was to add a bogus message field, as follows:

proc {
add_field => { "message" => "GELF workaround" }
interval => 60
vmstats => { }
loadavg => { }
meminfo => { }
pidstats => {
user => "root"
}
}

I believe you should include an empty message field or something similar to circumvent this problem.
