Quest 3 & Lynx R1

My hearth go to Lynx R1 but the reality of the market is on the Quest 3. As the Quest 3 is out and the Lynx is arriving, I am restarting to work on the topic.

I will re-use what I wrote here years ago to build some new workshops. You can find them here:

codeandquestseveryday's Issues

Question: How good is the tracking of the hands ?

It is good enough to play most of the game.
But in some game you need adapt your way to play it.
For example in Beat Saber you need to play with the controller mainly in front of you to make the best score you can.

PS: You need to play out of a sunny zone or the tracker will lose tracking all time.

Video: Scan house volume with Tilt Brush.

If you want to do it:

Buy Tilt Brush

  • Set the Quest in developer mode
  • Deactivate the guardian system
  • Draw the shape of your house
  • Make "check point" in each room
  • Check often if the Quest did not drift.
    • A. If the Quest drift, hide the camera with your hand and go back a check point.

Have fun :)

Question: Does the tracking has tracking drift ?

Yes and no. On a classic 3x3 meters, you won't have drifting.
But more the room is big, more you will have some.

You will definitively have some drifting on mini-foot field type of room.
Or if you use several rooms.

But the good part, Oculus try to re-caliber when it can.
If you don't let him recaliber and move from room to room, you will create a very good amount of drift.
Enough to be dangerous

Question: How good is the tracking in big room ?

No great but acceptable.
In a standard room. No problem.
If you try to use several room. The tracking system start to have some calibration bug.
If you try to use a room with white wall and not object around. The tracker will start to bug a lot.

Best situation, is a room with lot of volume and in those volume some distinctive texture.

As the camera are infrared/ black and right. In the linked photo they use white lines on back environment to make sure the camera can identify some key points.

You can find the experiment of me scanning a house:

  • Observe that I need to re-caliber myself regularly to be sure of not scanning the wrong part of the house.

To experiment: Record the Quest on the backpack with USB C + Audio Out->in .

It works perfectly ! But I really recommend to use Virtual Desktop to be able to remote control the PC and the open broadcast without having to switch to a screen or the Oculus S.
Cool part is about not having delay and no cable.

Does the USB C vs 5Ghz help... I don't know. But it mostly help for audio recording without delay or quality reduction.

(Remind me to do a image of this later. If you have interest in this experiment)
