internet_archive_downloader's Issues

Extension not working

I downloaded the extension. I went to the internet archive, and the buttons were not there. What happened? I don't see it. Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something? Pls help.

Original images

Internet Archive stores the scanned book page images which are of high resolution. I am not sure if your browse extension downloads the original images and combines them into a single PDF? Is there a way to know the place where original images are stored so that we can download them?
Thank you very much.

Feature: Show progress in percent

Adding a percentage of progess with maybe two decimal places would be nice to see that the download is still continuing when the progress is very slow.

TypeError: Failed to fetch

I am using Chrome version 113. When I click download, the progress bar slowly goes up. 30 minutes later(its a long book), the download button says Failed and when I click on it, a message pops up, saying "TypeError: Failed to fetch Please contact developer" or something similar.

No buttons show up

I've installed the extension on Chrome Version 122.0.6261.111 via the app store, visited a book, borrowed it, but there are no buttons.

It does nothing.

I added this extension to Brave for Mac v 1.50.121 and Chrome for Mac v 111.0.5563.146, and in both browsers, nothing happened. I am logged in to the Internet Archive, I have borrowed a book, I am viewing the book pages, I have refreshed the browser, I have confirmed the extension is enabled. But I see no download button between the quality button and favorite button.

Return Borrowed Books

  1. I have noticed that iadownloader v0.6.1 has been just released. I am using iadownloader v0.6.0 and It works very well . Shall I upgrade to the latest version?
  2. Is there any possibility to return the borrowed books automatically after the download is completed, instead of doing so manually?

What about books that can't be borrowed?

For some reason - probably bogus challenges - OLD books that should be public domain are not available to borrow. You can, however, view the full document in the browser. Pretty irritating. Below is an example but I've come across a bunch, recently. I get the sense there are bots abusing the Archive's take-down process. Probably the biggest retailer of hard copies of books like this - which aren't available through the publisher in print nor digitally - is Amazon. If you read the papers you know they're not above something like this. Either way, the public has a right.

Anyway, thank you for your work. I wish the browser extension economy were more rewarding to developers. If you manage to crack this chestnut I'll buy you a coffee. If you're trying to make actual money maybe you could develop a clever extension for Android?

Cheers

Make retry cont configurable

I widness a lot of chunks that only download after 2nd try in the console log. It would be great if I could set a larger retry limit than 3 because this is reached quite often for me.

Download failed

I used Firefox. I don't why the download failed. I have tried several times. Also, when I used MS Edge, the Quality button does not show up. See the last screenshot below.

Restarting partial downloads would be amazing

I'm trying to get a 700 page book and I can never get through more than 60% of the download before it fails. Some way to pick back up where I left off would be incredible.

Amazing tool regardless, thanks so much for making this.

Brilliant!

This worked effortlessly. This is BRILLIANT!

Download drops/becomes unsuccesful halfway (firefox)

Currently on firefox and this has been an issue for me for months. Pulled up chrome, and the extension works perfectly + as intended. If having issues on your browser, try using Chrome for this extension.

As always, I 10000% am so grateful for this extension and thank you so much!!

sincerely, a broke research student with a lack of constant internet

Error

I tried downloading a book and it failed and this message popped up: TypeError: Failed to fetch. Please contact the developer.

Download aborting at same spot every time

Tried this 3 or 4 times, get through about 270 of 340 pages and aborts, pretty much at the same spot. Error log below.

Firefox v 123.

Would be nice if you could preserve a partial download. The file deletes itself as soon as the error happens

Borrowed books can no longer be downloaded

My OS: Windows 10 Home Edition (version - 22H2)
My Web Browser: Mozilla Firefox 116.0.2 (64 bit)

I granted the add-on the needed permissions in its settings tab, I borrow a book, but after clicking the Download button, regardless of quality picked, I get an error message which states: "randomlygeneratedname.pdf could not be saved, because it was not possible to read/access the source file." (the name of the .pdf file changes at every attempt).

Developer asked me to provide a link to the book I'm attempting to download;

https://archive.org/details/sim_saturday-review-uk_the-saturday-review_1926-01-02_141_3662

Frankly speaking, though, the error shows up on every book which can only be borrowed (even ones I've been able to download before).

New buttons won't appear

Is there anything that needs to be done to activate the extension after installing it? I installed it and then borrowed a book, but the new buttons that are supposed to appear are not appearing.

Empty download files

Running into an issue it seems a couple others have had in the past - when the download bar shows as complete (or almost complete, it still shows as "downloading" even when the download bar is full and asks "abort?" if I click on it again), it only downloads a 0 byte PDF and a crswap file. (Have my adblocks on that page disabled; not sure what else might be going on.)

I'm running on a Mac OS 13.0 / Chrome v. 119.0.6045.159; the book in question is this one: https://archive.org/details/isbn_0329134477

(I also gave it a try on Firefox and got a "TypeError: NetworkError when attempting to fetch resource..
Please contact the developer" message.)

PDF files take 0 Bytes

Thank you for the last version.
It works perfectly with Zip Files.
PDF files are corrupted. after the download finishes and the book is returned, the PDF files takes 0 Bytes.
I guess it is better not to return the book immediately. you should make it wait for about 30 seconds before being returned.... probably more time with old and slow computers. This will give enough time to the book to be fully compiled.

Resume Download Following Loan Period End

There are certain books that are too long to download within their 1 hour loan period, which causes the extension to fail partially through the download.

One workaround for this is to use a lower quality for the download. However, would it be possible for the extension to save its progress on a particular book and resume the download after the user re-borrows it?

Downloads Stuck at 99%

OS: Windows 8.1
Browser: Google Chrome Version 109.0.5414.120
I noticed that Your extension for chrome is not working properly the last three days. The downloading process often stops at about 99%.
The " complete " caption never appears with a lot of books.
The downloaded PDf files are often damaged while the zip files miss the back covers of the downloaded books.
I can download the books only by refreshing the process several times.
Previously, I could download 7 books at the same time without any trouble. but now, from the seven books only one book get the complete caption. Sometime, no book ....
For example: https://archive.org/details/shipssailorssea0000humb
It took me 4 refreshing attempts to be able to download this book.
Thanks in Advance.
