dnc-dshop.services.identity's Introduction

Distributed .NET Core

DevMentors

What is Distributed .NET Core?

It's an open source project (and a course available soon at devmentors.io), providing in-depth knowledge about building microservices using .NET Core framework and variety of tools. One of the goals, was to create a cloud agnostic solution, that you shall be able to run anywhere.

We encourage you to join our Discourse forum available at forum.devmentors.io.

For this particular course, please have a look at the topics being discussed under this category.

What is DShop.Services.Identity?

DShop.Services.Identity is a microservice designed for the users bounded context DShop solution.

How to start the application?

Service can be started locally via dotnet run (executed in the /src/DShop.Services.Identity directory) or ./scripts/dotnet-run.sh shell script, by default it will be available under http://localhost:5000.

You can also run the application using Docker docker run --name identity-service -p 5000:5000 --network dshop-network devmentors/dshop.services.identity (include -d to run the container in the background).

It is required to have the basic infrastructure up and running first (RabbitMQ, MongoDB and Redis) in the same docker network named dshop-network. Services can be started using Docker Compose (and this file) as described here.

dnc-dshop.services.identity's Issues

Introducing Jaeger broke the Identity Service and prevents the customer from signing up

After introducing Jaeger, the call POST {{identityServiceUrl}}/sign-up broke. Or any API call for that matter that is being passed an empty CorrelationContext.
The empty Correlation context is being handled properly in the API gateway, but calls to the IdentityService do no pass the API gateway and in the IdentityService an empty CorrelationContext is not handled properly (and it does not contain a SpanContext that can be send to Jaeger). It throws an exception in the Jaeger middleware.

To fix this, the IdentityService needs to handle empty CorrelationContext's properly. We could borrow the methods from BaseController of the API gateway.
Then, the event, sent from the IdentityService class, also needs that new properly handled CorrelationContext, in order to pass it on when publishing the event.
