Hi Ben,

So this is actually not a backend issue (I'm using the OSX backend) and is just related to not having matplotlib set to interactive mode by default. You can change this in your .matplotlibrc, or just put the call plt.ion() after importing pyplot.

Thanks for catching that! I can confirm that it's working on my 10.8 mac.

Interestingly, the liveplot windows always appear in the background, behind all other windows. Is that deliberate, or should I look into ways to pop them to the front of the display stack?

For me it opens behind the terminal window, but in front of anything else I have open. I'm not sure this is something we can easily affect -- the only thing I've been able to find about it is this old matplotlib issue, but it doesn't really look like it went anywhere:

Quick note that the plotting scripts referenced here were moved to a separate examples repository as of commit c5873d0.
