chicago's Issues

[Survey] What kind of Blockstack event would you like in Chicago?

The Bitcoin & Open Blockchain Community - Chicago meetup group is bringing Blockstack to Chicago, and I thought our group also might want to weigh in on what kind of event(s) they should plan while they're in the city.

More info from them quoted below:

"For our next big event we are working on bringing Blockstack to Chicago! Blockstack is a new Internet for decentralized apps where users own their data. Blockstack's platform helps entrepreneurs and engineers build these dapps and deliver better end-user experiences. Check out the project here, https://blockstack.org/.

We’d like to know from you what kind of event featuring Blockstack you’d like to see happen here in Chicago. Please click here and tell us! → https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PYT9MD6"

Shameless plugs

While we're very much anti-shameless-plugs in general and especially at our meetings, I would imagine that it might occasionally be a value add for the group for us to be able to find out what others are working on and to share and get feedback on our personal crypto-related projects.

Let's vote by giving this either a thumbs up or a thumbs down reaction.

If people like the idea, we can use this issue for plugs. If people don't like the idea, that's cool too and I'll close it posthaste.

[Dapp experiment] Aragon DAO for Decentralized Software Chicago

TL;DR: Playing with a new DAO for this group - send me your address if you want to test it out.

Long version:

I was thinking it would be cool to try experimenting with a DAO for this group using Aragon (just on Rinkeby testnet though, so no real money involved).

I initialized an org on there called decentralizedsoftwarechicago and set it up with democracy-style voting (as opposed to oligarchy/multi-sig).

I have it set for a threshold of 50% yes votes required for a vote to pass, 10% of accounts needed for a quorum, and a 4 day voting period for all votes. (That way if someone is offline for a long weekend, they still have time to vote when they get back.)

If you're interested in testing it out with me, I just would need to know what Ethereum address you prefer to use to play around with dapps on Rinkeby. If you're already on Keybase, you can DM it to me on there.

If you'd prefer to use something other than Keybase to share your address, feel free to comment on this issue to let me know what tool you'd prefer to use to share it. I figure some people will prefer to keep their account/pseudonym as private as possible, whereas others might want it public for a chance at random airdrops - and in that case feel free to share it on this GitHub issue. But if you haven't carefully thought through your strategy / philosophy on this topic, I'd recommend defaulting to private. Also, note that when you switch from mainnet to Rinkeby using MetaMask, your Ethereum addresses in MetaMask are still the same ones. So it's worth considering creating a new, distinct address for testing dapps on testnets (but it's also a sensible choice not to do this - it's still early days so it's unclear what the opsec best practices are.)

Ideally Aragon would have a shareable link to let people opt in to a democracy-style DAO, but that feature doesn't seem to exist yet.

Meeting #5: Wed Aug 8, 2018. 6-8pm. Location: Chicago Blockchain Center. Topic: ZeppelinOS

Google Calendar event

Proposed topic: ZeppelinOS

"ZeppelinOS is an open-source, distributed platform of tools and services on top of the EVM to develop and manage smart contract applications securely."

"ZeppelinOS is an operating system designed specifically for smart contracts. It provides an on-chain set of upgradeable standard libraries, and an incentive structure to continually upgrade and patch itself."

Non-Chicago locations

Over in a different GitHub issue, @RickCarlino said, "...Fox.Build Makerspace has an 8,000 square foot building that is free for use. It's a bit of a hike from the city (Geneva metra is the closest train station), but I thought I'd offer just in case there is interest in a suburban venue."

Thanks for offering! I think this Chicago repo should focus only on the city of Chicago to make sure there's a critical mass of people at the meetings, but if lots of folks would prefer to meet in the suburbs, you're more than welcome to create a new repo under the https://github.com/decentralized-software org called chicago-suburbs or chicago-suburbs-west (If you'd like to do that and you encounter any issues, let me know - I may not have the permissions configured correctly.)

While we're on the topic of non-Chicago locations, I'll also point out that we're open to people making a repo for other cities anywhere in the world.

Picking a recurring day for these meetings

How does 3rd Tuesday of the month sound for these meetings?

The next three would be:

  • Tue Feb 20
  • Tue Mar 20
  • Tue Apr 17

Based on the conversation in this issue, I think we'll go with Catapult Chicago for the location.

@redsquirrel @adisney @xiaoyao1991 @KiranPanesar @adamyala @leavenstee @FourSigma @jongear @MercedesMane @ijerrod @beingrishy I won't mention everyone on future issues, but if you'd like to be notified of new issues for this repo going forward, click Watch towards the upper right of this window. (Or if you're trying to steer clear of more notifications, that's cool too.)

[Update] We have a group chat on Keybase now

I sent an email invite for a new group chat for this group to everybody who signed up through the Typeform.

The invite should be from Keybase, and the team is called dapp_chicago.

Feel free to join or ignore the invite - totally up to you.

If you haven't heard of Keybase, they describe themselves on their website like this: "Imagine a Slack for the whole world, except end-to-end encrypted across all your devices. Or a Team Dropbox where the server can't leak your files or be hacked."

I found that the combo of updating GitHub issues and sending one-way email blasts wasn't serving our needs for last-minute messaging about how to get into the room for our monthly meetings and sharing links for things discussed during the meetings.
