diskcryptor's Issues

virus

Google Chrome and the Yandex browser do not allow you to download your version of DiskCryptor - they say that it is a virus.

Please help

Hello there people of the internet.

I stumbled upon this amazing software and decided to try it.
Unfortunately I did not research properly and managed to mess up.

I encrypted my whole c: drive but forgot to encrypt the boot portions.

Now when I login, my laptop (razer blade 15 with a nvme storage running Windows 11) goes straight to Automatic repair and trys to repair and fails with error.
F:\Recovery\WindowsRE\Winre.wim\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt

I created a loader iso config but left it on the encrypted C: drive like an idiot.

I have tried to disable secure boot but it doesn't help

Can someone please help me?

Latest Discryptor build causes the Windows 10 OS to freeze during boot after the install

Hi,
The current Diskcryptor release has prevented OS booting on the latest Windows 10 build after the install and during the restart. OS freezes before making it to the login screen.

Installed on a Dell XPS15 and XPS13 with the same result. I could recover one laptop through booting into a tool called Strelec an editing the registry to remove the affected entry. This problem also occurred with the original version prior to this project revisiting the development.

What factors does DCrypt use for integrity and signatures?

After I encrypted every drive I had, I decided to change encrypted partition serial numbers with MiniTool Partition Wizard because my partition serial numbers were based on timestamps and included parts of my motherboard's hardcoded MAC address. After I changed partition serial numbers (without saving the original serial numbers), my DiskCryptor password stopped working... I didn't preserve any unencrypted copies of anything and lost my password database, authentication info, recovery codes, some 120 pages of my Ph.D., and a motherload of other important tokens... It was my fault, but I wish I knew what DiskCryptor took into consideration to verify integrity, signatures, etc.

I assume that DiskCryptor collects a bunch of fingerprints during first post-encryption reboot when it says "Collecting System Information", following another reboot.

What are some things I really shouldn't change to make sure DCryptor PW continues to work. I know in some cases, like Denuvo protection for games, simply opening a file, and re-saving in the same format (without changing any data in it) violates integirty.

winPE with dcrypt

hi

first of all, really appreciate you picking up this one after ntldr. imho this is the best encryption software available.

it is mentioned in the faq that soon there will be a container/portable version which does not require driver load. this sounds amazing, but in the meantime it would be great to have a bootable winpe with dc.

is there any howto make one? i can't really find any plausible info on embedding dcrypt drivers in a winpe build, also not clear if there are x64 unpacked driver which i can add to something like hiren bootcd or ones offered on https://sergeistrelec.ru/

would appreciate any pointers on this. i have an older win8 bootable usb with diskcrytor, but it lacks newer version of maintenance sw, etc. every time i have to decrypt disks, do smth (backup, etc) and then re-encrypt them. very time consuming.

Warning - Ransomware

Don't install. Once you finish installing DiskCryptor, it requests to restart your computer. Upon restarting, Drive C is encrypted and two hours later, it will ask you to pay to unencrypt. If this happens to you, don't pay. Just do a factory reset and say goodbye to your files unless you know how to unencrypt it without paying.

Check this for more information. https://www.ic3.gov/Media/News/2021/210323.pdf

How safe is master key and cached password in RAM?

Quote from FAQ section on diskcryptor.org

Is it possible for the password to my disk and/or its contents to be compromised by a malware?

Yes, malware running with administrative privileges, may extract the password from the memory and to read any data. DiskCryptor does not protect you from malware. This is not a vulnerability of the program, as such kind of protection is not a part of the cryptographic software function.

What exactly does "running with administrative privileges" mean?

I encrypt my drive so that I don't need to worry about data leak when I turn my drive in for RMA, or in case I lost the drive. I still use my computer normally, which means I have to run some close source programs that require administrator privilege (answer "yes" for UAC prompt), for example: just about every installer, anti-cheats and DRM, some OEM utilities like SSD toolbox, hardware monitor like afterburner... are they all capable of acquiring my master key and cached password?

Win10 can't boot

I just run the exe file and it said something like “installation finished, please reboot” After I reboot, it is now showing that “repairing the system”. Are any solution to help me to recover to the previous state? (or at least let me use my pc)

pxe boot

good day, all
I can not force decrypt the hard drive using PXE
the system loads memdisk and loader.img, doing something and tnen just hangs with the message: Loading boot sector... booting...
I tried with all possible ways configure bootloader for pxe with no success
It is works fine for bootloader installed on MBR HDD.
I remember very well that everything worked in older versions, but I stopped using it because it did not work with WINDOWS 10

is PXE booting work?

Wrong estimated time displayed

If estimated time of encryption is greater than 24 hours then it does not show days or total hours.
As solution it can show for example 28 hrs XX minutes or 1 day 4 hrs XX minutes.

It is actual for very big HDD arrays.
DiskCryptor cannot work without initial setup like LUKS does.

Encrypting system drive and another internal drive with same password prevents booting

Any way to get this working? If I remember correctly it worked fine on the original discryptor and both drives would be mounted after Windows booted.
I thought it wasn't working because the additional drive had a MBR table, but even after modifying it to GPT it still just hangs at the "insert password" screen.
If I type the wrong password it still displays the "wrong password" message.

DiskCryptor freezing upon opening

Hello,

I have an external hard drive that I used DiskCryptor to encrypt. Starting this past weekend when I plug in my external drive and boot up the program, DiskCryptor freezes and I can't access my external drive. Is this a program issue or a hard drive issue?

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS ON WINDOWS 11

As the title says, do NOT download this on windows 11.
I just lost all my data.

All I did was install DiskCryptor, reboot, encrypt C: drive and restart.
Then bam! Blue screen telling me windows isn't installed and to do a repair.

The disk started showing it had no data on it so had to do a full fresh windows without any of my data

Integration of DiskCryptor bootloader into grub2

I am considering using DiskCryptor instead of VeraCrypt or BitLocker to encrypt my Windows OS, as you mention:

MBR bootloader Full compatibility with third party boot loaders (LILO, GRUB, etc.).

I want to have a Linux encrypted on another partition on the same disk, next to the encrypted Windows, with grub2 being the main bootloader.

Can you please tell me how I would integrate the DiskCryptor bootloader into grub2, i.e. for it to be one of my entries in /etc/grub.d/40_custom/, e.g.

menuentry "Windows 7 (DiskCryptor Bootloader)" --class windows{
    savedefault
    ...
   chainloader (hd0,7)/disk-cryptor-boodloader.img
}

If you could point me to any existing documentation on this topic, that would of course be fine as well.

Blue screen after installing DiskCryptor

Hello to everyone, I have a external harddrive that I did Cryptet 5 years ago with my old Computer on windows 7 using DiskCryptor.
Now I have a new computer with Windows 10 Home
After downloading Disk Cryptor and install the program says I have to restart the computer.
After this the Blue screen is coming and I have to reset the computer to older time with out installing DiskCryptor.
So that means I'm not abel to run the program on my new computer.
What's the easiest solution to get access to my Cryptet hard disk again?
Thanks for helping me.
Kind regards Thomas

Bootable USB to ISO

I make a bootable USB via DiskCryptor.
Does anyone know how to make a bootable ISO from a bootable USB?

Watchdog timer

Hola!

Seems on some hardware DC with EFI boot does not set watchdog timer properly.
For example Lenovo Legion Y530-15ICH with InsydeH2O Rev.5.0 BIOS.
Laptop is keep resetting in ~9sec after DC show password prompt.

I can't type my SupaDupaComplex32symbols password in this time frame, only simple passwords works for now ((

The problem after rebooting on Win10

good day! I have a small problem: in Windows 10, I installed DiskCryptor on disk D, and then restarted the computer, as required by the program. after that, the message "the computer is not working properly" is displayed and it is suggested to restart (cycle) or troubleshoot. can you tell me what the problem might be and how to fix it?
P.S. I couldn't encrypt anything, the program is on disk D. In the console on behalf of the administrator: X:\windows\system32 . This does not allow you to switch to another drive. I've seen other articles on this topic here. but I don't understand how to do it. I will be immensely grateful if you write more

enter password Glitch, please help

Weird bug or something on the ‘enter password:’ prompt is doing this key spam thing, as if teach key press is getting multiplied many times. I have checked with different keyboards and I’m positive it’s not a keyboard issue.
This is causing me to not be able to access my PC, so I need help quick.
I have attached a video of what is happening.
Thank you.

Boot Failure after install - secure boot disabled

I just installed beta 3 on windows 11 (while secure boot was enabled ),
upon restart that was prompted i disabled secure boot.

I still get a BSOD with inaccessible boot device.

Any suggestions?

Compilation instructions

Hello! It seems the project makes use of EDK and that takes some setting up, so would it be possible to get more detailed environment setup and compilation instructions?
Thanks!

Hello,I can't boot now

When I encrypt C drive, i chosen"Use External Bootloader",Then I cannot access Windows and blue screen.
Where can I get the Bootloader?

Windows 11: BSOD on boot after enabling WSL

I have a Win11 Pro with DiskCryptor installed, everything working fine so far.
At least until I try to install WSL, then I get a BSOD immediately on startup:

SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED
in dcrypt.sys

Tried enabling WSL a couple of times, each time the same problem.

The Windows drive is encrypted with VeraCrypt, the other HDDs are encrypted using DiskCryptor.
I tried reproducing the issue in a VM without luck, everything works fine in there.

Sadly Windows doesn't even create a minidump in this case, so I'm not really sure how to tackle this issue.
But I'd really like to fix this / help fixing it.

Update:
the same BSOD occurs on a clean Win11 Pro setup (install Win11, immediately install DiskCryptor, enable WSL -> BSOD on boot)

hello

Hello, when new Build v1.2 Beta 4 ?

Windows 10 1909 to 2004 upgrade issue & 2004 issue

Windows would not upgrade with DiskCryptor 1.1 installed. Once un-installed the upgrade proceeded.
Re-installing v1.1 on Win 10 ver 2004 went OK but when I launch DiskCryptor 1.1 it just want's to reboot the comptuer with this message:
image
I upgraded DiskCryptor to 1.2 beta and it is doing the same message. No amount of restarts removes the message and DiskCryptor remains unusable.

cant install build 1.2 beta 3 on win 64

downloaded from git hub, proberties say itss blocked, unblock and apply, then try to install as administrator. message says windows cannot locate file, maybe i dont have access to file.
did the same thing on my 32 bit computer, did notg bother with unblock or use administrator level, installed fine nd works great. thats why i want to use it on my 64 bit computer

incidentally, two features worth touting are that you can encrypt a thumb drive that already has files on it, and you wont lose them; and you dont seem to lose megabytes of space on the thumbdrive to overhead. Other usb encryptors fail on both these counts.

Instructions for using SecureBoot shim?

Could I please trouble you for some detailed instructions on how to use the bootloader shim to enable DiskCryptor to work with SecureBoot enabled? Where can I download/create the shim? How do I correctly use it to install the DiskCryptor Bootloader?

I have already read the article here: https://habr.com/ru/post/446238/
And seen the GitHub page here: https://github.com/ValdikSS/Super-UEFIinSecureBoot-Disk

But neither of these seem to indicate where/how to get the shim itself, and there are no instructions on how to correctly use it with DiskCryptor once you have it.

Also, I note that after installing DiskCryptor on my Win10 system, if I go to Tools -> Config Bootloader, then select a Drive, and I check the box for "Install shim" then the "Select path to file" box does NOT activate, meaning that whether or not the Install shim box is checked, the path selector never activates. Is this a bug or by design? It appears to me that you cannot use a shim anymore even if you have one, because the dialog box to point to the shim file cannot be activated no matter what. Is this working as designed?

Diskcryptor and 4k display

Hello

I have encrypted my notebook with a 4k display.
The bootloader text is very small and very hard to read. Is it possible to use a bigger font size?

Add support for different passwords per encryption

I see no benefit of encrypting more than one time if the password for each encryption are the same.

If more than one encryption are supported with the same or different algorithms but with separate passwords, it would be impossible to identify if any of the passwords are guessed correct. If the passwords are the same, guessing if it is correct is trivial by testing the password against the supported combination of algorithms.

Supporting different passwords would open up the option of encrypting multiple times with the same algorithm. This could have performance benefits since algorithms with hardware acceleration could be used, for example AES+AES with two different passwords. Guessing the first password correct would only result in random data, making it impossible to know that the password was actually correct.

help to encrypt windows 2go flash drive

hi, i tried to encrypt windows 2go flash drive, all ok, install botloader, after reboot say to enter password, but after enter password, i have error that this device is not bootable (or OS not found, press ctr+alt+delete)
what i do wrong?

Boot failure Windows 11

Attempted to install the program and at reboot to install the driver, Windows 11 could not boot, showing error of Inaccessible boot device. A System Restore fixed the boot problem.

How to decrypt from bootable USB drive? Portable version?

First of all - thank you for this excellent tool!

The only trouble I have with DiskCryptor is that I must be able to decrypt my drives/partitions a bootable USB environment, such as Hiren's Boot CD. I can't get DiskCryptor to launch from such an environment, but I have no problem launching VeraCrypt portable version from the same environment. Any idea why? Is there a way to make DiskCryptor portable?

PXE boot

Hello.

DiskCryptor older version has pxe boot.
Will new DiskCryptor EFI have pxe boot in future?
It will be a very good feature.

Can't decrypt and boot system

I encrypted system drive and after reboot I'm prompted to enter password. I enter it and get 5x "Can't read partition starting at [partitions offset here]" and last message is "password incorrect" but it's correct, at the moment I decrypt drive from new windows installation, so it's problem with bootloader.
My drive is 2TB 4Kn, it might matter. Hardware-accelerated AES encryption. GPT/UEFI (tried enabling CSM, still not works) and boot from first password matching partition selected in DC bootloader settings, also I tried boot from MBR boot partition, doesn't work too. System is Windows 10 Ameliorated x64

Windows 10 not booting after installation reboot

Hi

I bought a new SSD and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 on it, and then I installed Diskcryptor and then it asked me to reboot the system, after rebooting it doesn't recognise the drive anymore and says 'checking media'. Secure boot is turned off in the BIOS.

Nothing was encrypted, all I did was install Diskcryptor and rebooted. Is there any way that I can get Windows to boot up?

Help in creating USB Boot

Hello!

Win10 Repair after system drive encryption

Hi all,

just tried several combinations with a new PC and SSD, latest Win10.
Installed WIN10 from USB, then diskcryptor, encrypted system drive and after restart and passwort prompt, win10 repair pops up, and tells me unable to repair.
Tried several settings, incl. disabling fast start in BIOS and WIN10, no change in behaviour.
Any ideas?

Regards,
Daniel
