mod_php is not multi-thread safe. This is a problem with mod_spdy due to the
threaded nature of the streams. We should either scan the loaded modules at
startup or look at the modules in the chain for each stream and log (once per
module) to warn the server owner about mismatched modules, and to tell them
what they can do to address it. For instance they should use php-cgi and
mod_fcgid instead of mod_php.

What version/revision number of mod_spdy are you using?
wget https://dl-ssl.google.com/dl/linux/direct/mod-spdy-beta_current_i386.deb
What version of Apache are you using, and on what operating system? (Use
`apache2ctl -v` to check.)
Apache/2.2.0 (Fedora) on Debian Squeeze/Sid
What other Apache modules are you using? (Use `apache2ctl -M` to check.)
I will check as soon as I get home, I do not have server access here.
At least:
- mod_rewrite
- mod_evasine
- mod_security
- mod_pagespeed
What browser version did you use to access the mod_spdy server? On what
operating system? What flags was the browser invoked with? (For
Chrome/Chromium, go to about:version to check.)
Chrome 18.0.1025.163 on OSX 10.7
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Login into the ISPConfig CP
What is the expected result? What do you see instead?
The CP runs without problems on normal SSL, but not with activated mod_spdy.
ISPConfig uses ajax technology to load the navigations (top-navigation as well
as sidebar-navigation). Both do not appear on spdy.
Please provide any additional information below.
If you need a demo account to access the ISPConfig CP let me know. :)

Not an issue but it might be usefull to know if the client is connected via
SPDY or not.
Perhaps by setting an "SPDY" environment variable to spdy version it might be
sufficient.
Thanks for your work.

operating system? What flags was the browser invoked with? (For

Firefox 13.0 beta
What steps will reproduce the problem?
Accessing a mod_spdy site with Firefox and spdy enabled in about:config,
content returned from Apache are not gzip encoded even though mod_gzip is
properly configured. Disabling spdy in Firefox resumes gzipping, as well as
accessing the spdy enabled server from Chrome.
Firefox appears to be sending the appropriate headers but the enablement of
mod_spdy specifically interferes with whether content is returned gzipped or
not.

We currently do not support:
2.7.3 RST_STREAM
2.7.4 HELLO
2.7.5 NOOP
2.7.6 PING
2.7.7 GOAWAY
2.7.8 HEADERS
We need to add support for these. In addition, we should generate RST_STREAM
frames when the stream queue depth reaches a certain point.

From the mod-spdy-discuss mailing list:
I have a weird problem with mod_spdy and the ssl option SSLRequireSSL.
Without the option i get a SPDY connection, but when I turn on
SSLRequireSSL on a directory I get "403 Forbidden" and in the ssl
error log:

mod_spdy, I see that the reported sizes are no longer 0. Looks like we need to
debug how the size value gets set and figure out why it's zero. Perhaps this
has something to do with mod_ssl not being in the filter chain?

I'd like mod_spdy to enable my apache to speak spdy to sites that apache is
proxying to.

I don't think the output currently frees buckets passed to it. I'm pretty
sure it should.

On my desktop, mod_spdy works fine. On my laptop, I'm consistently getting
2 data frames and no SYN_REPLY frame. Here's an example:

Current Google Chrome on Windows 7 (up2date) with nog additional flags
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Visit https://www.in-ventid.nl/test without spdy and everything works fine
2. Visit the exact same url with spdy and error messages start appearing in the
error_log of Apache.
3. However this does not apply for support.in-ventid.nl which work the same
with and without spdy
I'd expect everything to work the same with spdy as without as it is a
transport layer and therefore should not cause any changes in the webapplication
The messages in het apache error_log are

On my laptop (ubuntu linux) I'm finding that the apache request_rec's
request headers are always NULL in the output filter. This is different from
the behavior on my desktop (also ubuntu linux).
In both cases I'm running apache 2.2.8.
On the laptop I have a minimal module configuration (disabled all optional
modules) so it could be that some other module is causing the headers to get
populated on my desktop.

Hi,
When I configure a directory using http basic authentication I cannot use SPDY.
Chrome enter in an endless loop when I put https://xxx.yyy.com/sms in the
address bar.
I can use spdy on a directory without basic authentication
I use apache 2.2.22 with this modules (direct copy from my conf):
ssl spdy alias auth_basic authn_file authz_host authz_groupfile authz_default
authz_user autoindex cgi dir env expires include log_config mime setenvif
suexec userdir rewrite jk auth_digest ldap authnz_ldap proxy proxy_ajp
proxy_http passenger fcgid scgi dav dav_svn headers flvx python authn_otp
deflate
the interesting parts of my apache site.conf are:
<VirtualHost 192.168.2.10:80>

DocumentRoot /srv/www/xxx.yyy.com
AddDefaultCharset utf-8
<Directory "/srv/www/xxx.yyy.com/sms">

Reported by Andries Louw Wolthuizen on the mod-spdy-discuss list:
mod_spdy is generating intermittent errors of the form:
[error] [2612:2628:ERROR:mod_spdy.cc(385)] Error during speculative
read: 70007
This represents an APR_TIMEUP status, which doesn't warrant logging an error in
this case. We should suppress this message for APR_TIMEUP (or at least demote
it to a lesser log-level).

We might be doing this already, but if not, we need to add support for it.
Please close this if we're already disabling chunking.

We currently use the modified Chromium base from pagespeed, but might be able
to trim the base deps even further. We need to investigate what if anything
can be trimmed from the current base deps list.

When i POST a form via https which has at least 1 datafield via Chrome
18.0.997.0 i get the following error in the apache error_log:
[Mon Jan 30 21:53:17 2012] [error] [client 2001:4dd0:ff00:1ef::2] Invalid
method in request 0
The POST Data isn´t transmitted to php, (postdata is empty)..
I use mod_fcgid to drive php (because mod_php isn´t threadsafe)
i use the r231 version of mod_spdy and used the script on this google project
page to compile mod_ssl
The problem disappears when i disable mod_spdy
https://admin.neosolve.de/posttest.php <- this is a script on the server which
just echos $_POST (php)
My apache version is Apache/2.2.16 (Debian)

The current InputFilterInputStream flattens the next filter's brigades into a
byte stream.
However, this means that we end up discarding metadata buckets, like EOF.
We need to figure out which buckets we might be ignoring and possibly come up
with a way to pass them on to the next filter.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Add the compiled to modules/ directory from apache2
2. Added Loadmodule File to Apache
3. a2enmod spdy && /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
4. Opened a SSL Connection to a specific Vhost.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I hoped the spdy provided content :) But at least the connection was resetted
by the server. Log:

1. download tar

Ideally this should build without issues.. I got chrome to build without
errors.

I am trying to do some tests for SPDY server and not able to build it

I checked the commit log and seems this was part of some refactoring which has
broken the build.
Any way to get the build working??

1. Start Apache server with GnuTLS enabled.
2. Check /var/log/apache2/error.log for error messages related to .
What is the expected result? What do you see instead mod-spdy?
mod-spdy should have been loaded successfully. Instead, it complains that
mod_ssl is not installed.
Please provide any additional information below.
It seems that mod-spdy currently depends on mod_ssl. However, GnuTLS provides
HTTP with SSL/TLS as well.

In HttpStreamAccumulator, our implementation needs to match the one in the
Apache core filters impl. Specifically we need to match the impl in
core_filters.c ap_core_input_filter. Ideally we should have unit tests to
verify that the implementations are consistent.

on the client side, once this happens, I am totally hosed. I'm guessing the
decompression context is out of sync. There is a TODO(mdsteele) in the code to
decompress all frames even if we don't care about them. My hunch is that fixing
that TODO will fix this issue.

1. Set up PHP-FPM
2. Make a script that does <?php var_dump($_SERVER);
3. Check that the array key 'HTTPS' is missing or set to off
What is the expected result? What do you see instead?
I would expect mod_spdy to set HTTPS to "on" because of two reasons:
- The connection is encrypted
- The schema part of the URL is https://
Please provide any additional information below.
This makes some web pages act weird. The only confirmed problem so far is that
WordPress doesn't recognize the connection as HTTPS and thus loads assets using
an insecure connection, which will result in mixed content warnings.
However, I suspect that other web applications would have the same problem
since it's a common way of checking for secure/HTTPS connections.
Original issue reported on code.google.com by [email protected]

The common way to force HTTP traffic over to HTTPS is to use mod_rewrite like
so:
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}
as described in e.g.:
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-apache-force-https-secure-connections.html
See the mod_rewrite docs:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/mod_rewrite.html#rewritecond
The HTTPS variable is populated in mod_rewrite by calling the mod_ssl optional
hook ssl_is_https, which returns false for any of the mod_spdy request handling
threads.
The result is that web servers that use the above redirect pattern go into a
redirect loop.
A mod_spdy-safe way to achieve the same redirect is:
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^80$
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}
but we should still fix this.
This is closely related to issue 31. As Matthew notes in that issue, "the SPDY
stream requests are handled internally using "virtual" connections for which
mod_ssl is disabled".
We'll need to think about perhaps leaving mod_ssl "enabled" but have it pass
traffic through.
Alternatively, perhaps we can export an ssl_is_https function ourselves; not
sure how that would work exactly and what the ordering is for which module
would "win" when registering. So this seems quite fragile.
More thought needed.

Several folks have reported seeing this warning in their Apache logs:
[9179:9180:WARNING:http_to_spdy_filter.cc(113)] HttpToSpdyFilter is not the last filter in the chain: http_to_spdy
The "HttpToSpdyFilter is not the last filter in the chain" warning is issued
when there is an output filter later in the chain that the HTTP-to-SPDY
translation filter, which normally shouldn't happen. Even stranger, the above
warning indicates that the filter that comes later in the chain is the
HTTP-to-SPDY filter itself. I am not sure yet how that is happening.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Enable IO in the Apache log file
2. Restart the server
3. Look for files in the IO
What is the expected result? What do you see instead?
I expected to see a number corresponding to the number of bytes sent to the
client on the request. Instead, I saw 0.
Please provide any additional information below.
I use a custom log format that is as follows:
LogFormat "%v %h %l %u %t \"%r\" %>s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\" %I
%O" combinediovhost
%I and %O come from mod_logio, and they report the total bytes incoming and
outcoming for the request, not just the *requested* bytes, as the usual format
would report. This is more useful for knowing how much data the server is
actually delivering.
This is extremely important for me to know exactly how many bytes are
transferred, and I was interested in knowing the effect of SPDY's compression
on IO.

As we have documented here:
http://code.google.com/p/mod-spdy/wiki/KnownIssues
and here:
https://www.modspdy.com/blog/2012/04/15/using-mod_spdy-with-php/
mod_php and mod_spdy may not get along well, for the same reason that mod_php
doesn't work well with the worker MPM.
When we detect mod_php in the filter chain along w/ mod_spdy, we should put a
message in the Apache error log that briefly explains this is not recommended
and link to a document (probably on developers.google.com mod_spdy site) that
explains how to configure mod_fcgid etc.

mod_spdy will generally only step in for HTTPS requests. A browser that
connects with HTTP can be advised that SPDY is available on another port (e.g.
443) by sending an Alternate-Protocol header with the response. We should make
mod_spdy send this header automatically for HTTP responses (when configured to
do so).

It seems that some response streams end up getting truncated. For instance on
our test server the file:
https://ec2-107-21-132-32.compute-1.amazonaws.com/wp-admin/load-styles.php?c=0&d
ir=ltr&load=admin-bar,wp-admin
gets served truncated, and the Chrome browser refuses to save even a byte of it
to disk.
If you fetch the same resource over HTTP:
http://ec2-107-21-132-32.compute-1.amazonaws.com/wp-admin/load-styles.php?c=0&di
r=ltr&load=admin-bar,wp-admin
it works just fine.
I'm guessing that this may be due to some chunked encoding issues we haven't
worked out yet.
