menufilter's Introduction

Hi there πŸ‘‹

I'm a senior software engineer at Thunderbird. This takes up most of my time and doesn't leave a lot for the projects you'll find here, which are mostly add-ons for Thunderbird and/or Firefox, and other bits and pieces I've created over the years.

menufilter's Issues

Does not work in bookmarks toolbar menu anymore

I use menufilter only for this menu. A few days ago the item "Subscribe to this page" reappeared, despite being still marked as hidden in the menufilter options. I then unhid the item "View Bookmarks Sidebar" and was subsequently not able to hide it again (Despite it being marked as hidden in menufilter). I'm on Firefox Version 45.0.2.

"Tab Context Menu" category blank

I get this on Firefox 42 64-bit running on Windows 10.

Is this category displayed normally for you? I also have Tab Mix Plus and other extensions installed, so maybe it's some incompatibility.

WebExtension?

I love how your add-on has helped to clear up all the junk that gets added to context menus, really appreciate what you've created here. Do you have plans to continue this as a WebExtension?

No Options, No Item in Menu

Sorry if I'm simply being daft, but I can't seem to find a way to adjust the settings for Menu Filter. I set this up at one point to remove the "apply filters to FOLDER" option in the Tools menu because I would often mistakenly click this command instead of the "apply filters to MESSAGE" command. However, when I went back to do something else with Menu Filter, I found that I could no longer access Menu Filter's settings. I don't remember whether I accessed these settings from the menu before, or from the 'plug ins' page, but in neither location are the settings present. Am I overlooking something? Internal pages opened as tabs do not have menus filtered

I'm sorry for opening another issue, but I think that maybe you don't receive notifications for new posts on issues after closing them. I've left a comment on #15 reporting a problem with the Tab Context Menu that still exists (at least when used along with Tab Mix Plus on Firefox 42 for Windows):

"Undo Close Tab" item isn't hidden from the tab bar context menu even after I disable it with Menu Filter.

I assume you didn't see it because you've replied to #16, which was posted after that. Anyway, after the fix for #16, it still shows all Library menu entries to me:

I got the update today, but the items still show up even after a browser restart:

Screenshot

I'm not the only one who can't hide these entries. A user on Reddit said that he tried your extension but uninstalled it because "Open All in Tabs" and other items didn't work.

Note: If Menu Filter 12 was released before that fix, ignore the second part of this post.

Help for Cyberfox

Hi Geoff.

Is it possible to add Cyberfox compatible with Menu Filter please?

Cyberfox is my 2nd browser after Firefox, and I like Menu Filter.

TIA and have a good day!

SEO suggestion for better visibility on the Mozilla repository and search engines

I assume that many people who would be happy with your extension search for "menu editor" instead of "filter". One needs to scroll down a lot to find Menu Filter on the Mozilla repository, and the only result that appears to me on the first page of Google (set to display 100 results) is a Japanese blog. I suggest you to add the words "editor" (and maybe also "edit") to the description to help you with the rankings.

For instance, you can change the first line from "Keep your menus in check by filtering out items you never use." to "A menu editor for Firefox. Keep your menus in check by filtering out items you never use."

Filtering search bar

It would be nice to have a "find as you type" search bar for us to find or filter entries quickly. E.g. typing in "image" would show all menu entries with the word "image".

Feature request

Hello,

I would like to have the ability to edit the context menu when right clicking the browsers taskbar button.

I would also like to see the ability to remove the "Ctrl+Shift+B" text located beside the "Show All Bookmarks" option in the bookmarks drop down menu.

Otherwise a near perfect addon.

Please add ability to modify submenus, specifically Mark

I accidentally clicked on All Read in the Mark menu (in the Context menu) of Thunderbird and lost all of my unread markers.

I would like to hide the All Read choice so it never happens again, but can't in the current version of menufilter.

Any chance of letting users hide parts of the Mark menu

Do not hide items of some addons

One Tab addon adds item to the context menu. Menu filter hide this item, but after firefox restart, "One Tab" item reappears. It seems that One Tab loads after Menu Filter.

about:menufilter doesn't work

I'm getting the following error: The address isn’t valid

Could this be caused by another add-on?

I noticed there is a new 'Recently Bookmarked' section, I believe it was introduced with v49 and I was hoping I could disable it with Menu Filter.

You've done great work with your add-on.

Menu Filters for other extension's menu items not persisted through Firefox restart

As reported by a user on the Firefox addon page (review), the filter for menu items added by other extensions are not functionally persisted after restarting Firefox. (The configuration persists, but the actual filtering is not)

One example is a menu item added by DownThemAll (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/downthemall/), the 'Save Image with DownThemAll' item in the image context menu; disable it in Menu Filter (confirm that it is disabled by right-clicking on an image), restart Firefox, and it still appears when right-clicking on an image. If you go into the Menu Filter page, re-enable it and re-disable it, the item then is removed from the context menu again (note: this applies all unapplied filters, not just the one).

I suspect this is due to load order - that Menu Filter applies its changes before extensions such as DownThemAll do. As I recall by its behavior, Menu Editor (Menu Filter's functional predecessor) seemed to implement its changes when the menu was drawn; I'm guessing you implement menu changes only once at Firefox load?

Bookmarks & History Button Menus

Hello! First off, awesome add-on, Geoff! Just finished doing a review of it on the Firefox page. Coming here I discovered you also created New Tab Tools, which I also recently started using, which then led to me installing Undo Close Tab. Your on a roll!

That said, I've found one little hiccup with Menu Filter. Some of the items I hid in the bookmarks and history menus still show up in the toolbar icon versions of those menus - i.e. the menus from the icons I moved onto the address bar from the customize menu.

This issue doesn't really affect me much at all since I previously used Menu Editor, which didn't work at all with those two menus, but I though I'd point it out.

(I only use Firefox's address bar, to which I added the bookmarks, history and "share this page" icons, and the few bookmark icons I use, which I moved from my hidden bookmark toolbar. I also keep the actual menu bar hidden, since the items I keep in the new customizable Firefox menu are all I usually need.)

Anyhoo...
