Professors across Departments

Currently, professor data is repeated in the JSON file when the professor is in multiple departments. The current tree structure is useful for parsing the data and displaying it, but it is not great for data storage. Thoughts on ways to reduce duplicate leaves?

Smoother data-update workflow

Current workflow:

  1. Send google form survey
  2. Change the headers on the google spreadsheet to the JSON headers
  3. Save as CSV and convert to JSON (or use the barebones python file in the repo)
  4. Add relevant entries to the JSON Database
  5. Push to main

Possible new workflow

  1. Send google form survey
  2. Save as CSV
  3. Python script (new) merges the CSV data into the JSON file
  4. Push to main

Updating notecards

In the future, we will have many updated entries for professors (i.e. a new notecard per updated year). Do we want to keep this data forever? a limited time (e.g. a year)? Do we want to notify a professor when their information is removed due to being antiquated?

BBE: Biochemistry, Structural, and Molecular Cell Biology

The commas in the department name breaks the JSON parsing. The current patch is to remove the commas in the professor notecards to BBE: Biochemistry Structural and Molecular Cell Biology. Instead, the departments should be separated by semicolons or another character and the commas should be added back in to make it BBE: Biochemistry, Structural, and Molecular Cell Biology.
