some-time-later's Issues

precomposed inverted breve letters do not have their marks

The glyphs for the 8 precomposed inverted breve code points below contain the base character, but do not the inverted breve mark.

U+0206	LATIN CAPITAL LETTER E WITH INVERTED BREVE
U+0207	LATIN SMALL LETTER E WITH INVERTED BREVE
U+020A	LATIN CAPITAL LETTER I WITH INVERTED BREVE
U+020B	LATIN SMALL LETTER I WITH INVERTED BREVE
U+020E	LATIN CAPITAL LETTER O WITH INVERTED BREVE
U+020F	LATIN SMALL LETTER O WITH INVERTED BREVE
U+0212	LATIN CAPITAL LETTER R WITH INVERTED BREVE
U+0213	LATIN SMALL LETTER R WITH INVERTED BREVE

Sample from hb-view:
some_time_later_breve

Fix:

Add inverted breve mark glyph to each of the above glyphs.

U+0521 and U+0522 are swapped

The glyphs of U+0521 CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER EL WITH MIDDLE HOOK and U+0522 CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER EN WITH MIDDLE HOOK are swapped.

dotted and dotless I glyphs inappropriate for Turkic (and other) usage

Many Turkic orthographies distinguish between a dotted and dotless "I". These orthographies use U+0049 LATIN CAPITAL I to represent the uppercase dotless ⟨I⟩ and U+0130 LATIN CAPITAL LETTER I WITH DOT ABOVE to represent the uppercase dotted ⟨İ⟩. Additionally, some Athabaskan language orthographies regularly avoid putting dots on upper- or lowercase "I" to avoid confusion with ⟨Í⟩.

Examples from Noto Sans:
noto_sans_i
(U+0049, U+0131, U+0130, U+0069)

"Some Time Later" places a dot on U+0049, and places a very high dot on U+0130, making both glyphs inappropriate for these orthographies:
some_time_later_i
(U+0049, U+0131, U+0130, U+0069)

Fix:

  • Substitute Iota for I (U+0049) for the following languages: Azerbaijani (AZE ), Crimean Tatar (CRT ), Gaguaz (GAG ), Kazakh (KAZ ), Tatar (TAT ), Turkish (TRK ), Slavey (SLA ), North Slavey (SCS ), South Slavey (SSL), Chipewyan (CHP ).
    • dotlessI is inappropriate because it's not the full height of the other uppercase glyphs.
    • I imagine the dot on I likely needs to be maintained in most usage to map to the origin font, hence the OT language tagging.
    • Dogrib/Tlicho (dgr) would also be appropriate but it does not yet have a registered OpenType language tag.
  • Change Idotaccent (U+0130) to use Iota as its base glyph instead of dotlessI.
  • For U+00CD LATIN CAPITAL LETTER I WITH ACUTE and U+012E LATIN CAPITAL LETTER I WITH OGONEK for Slavey (SLA ), North Slavey (SCS ), South Slavey (SSL), and Chipewyan (CHP ), use a new glyph with Iota as the base glyph.

Exclamation mark alternate

Oh hi.

Just suggesting that it would be great for the current, backslant exclamation mark, to have an upright variant as well, because: one, it's common; and two, it's also faithful to the cartoon. Also a forwardslant maybe? I don't know if it's common enough

Thank you.

Hiragana / Katakana / Roadmap

Hello, can you add Hiragana and Katakana letters?
I like the Japanese letters.
Please tell the coming changes and characters.
I'm since years interested on the SpongeBob font.

Some Greek glyphs are duplicated with incorrect glyph variants

The glyphs of U+03CF..U+03D4, U+03D7, and U+03F0 are duplicates of basic Greek letters’ glyphs. U+03CF and U+03D7, the kai symbols, are kappas with descenders. The rest are specific glyph variants of the basic letters. See also ctrlcctrlv/TT2020#12.
Ϗϐϑϒϓϔϗϰ
For comparison, here they are in Nishiki-teki, along with the basic letters they look different from.
Ϗϐϑϒϓϔϗϰ ΚβθΥΎΫκκ

To be clear, duplication is not a problem per se. It’s fine that U+03D5 GREEK PHI SYMBOL duplicates U+03C6 GREEK SMALL LETTER PHI, because their glyph in this font is the one that U+03D5 requires. It’s just some of them that don’t have the right glyph variants.

ģ (U+0123 Latin Small Letter G with Cedilla) is incorrect

U+0123 LATIN SMALL LETTER G WITH CEDILLA is rendered with a combining upright comma that overlaps with the base glyph:

gcedilla

It should be an inverted comma. See Noto Sans:
gcedilla_noto_sans

Fix:

  • Invert and potentially reposition combining comma mark on uni0123
