Some more datasheet digging is required. But it does seem like there are both DLx2416 and DL2416T parts, which are surprisingly different:

• DL2416T is a four-digit 17-segment (8 + * + .) display

  • Accepts subset of ASCII, chars 32-95 only

• DLx2416 is a four-digit 5x7 display (DLG2416, DLR2416, etc)

  • Accepts full low-ASCII set, 0-127

For the 'T' variants I can handle this ASCII subsetting in software. I just did so as part of some changes to DLx2416. But this was a mistake since the behavior should only apply to 'T' variants.
