Can't. Customers keep coming in from outdated URLs. It's not in our hands. And it's no solution to the technical flaw of the redis session cache consuming too much performance at this point...

Of course you can, and you should for SEO reasons as well.. All of those old backlinks are valuable unless they 404 in which case they are useless. Use Magento's URL Rewrites to add them via Magento, or use Apache/nginx to redirect them before they even hit Magento.
Also, you should always use the latest version from github, especially before reporting issues.. It has many improvements, and I am in no way interested in supporting an old version just because it was bundled with Magento.
