codeofconduct's Issues

Needs a "brief" section

I expect that every member of the community is following this code of conduct, but I don't expect every member to read all the details. Providing a "Brief" would increase the number of members who read and are enforcing this code of conduct.

Who to call for help?

How do brigades get advice for what to do when there's a violation of the code for conduct?

HR Contact

I was reading through the COC and its various parts today, it outlines in the slack.md to contact Brenda Stone if you have been harassed. However her linkedin currently states that her time with COA ended in May of 2017. Does this need to be revised to show the current point of contact for any concerns?

Clear, positive, approachable, user tested CoC?

To me, the CfA Code of Conduct seems full of confusing, verbose, and negative legalese. It feels more like an SAT comprehension test than a visionary and welcoming public document. On the other end of the spectrum, I find Exercism's CoC very clear and approachable.

I don't want to word-smith for it's own sake, but I think two of the most important features of a Code of Conduct (besides the content) are its clarity and readability.

So, I was wondering has CfA ever tested this document against real users?

  • How do they feel after reading it?
  • Do they feel welcome and know what to expect (particularly if they're part of a protected class)?
  • What are their impressions of the organization after reading it?
  • Do they feel confident enforcing this code of conduct (particularly if they're a leader)?
  • Can they accurately identify violations when quizzed with example situations?

Those are just some ideas of how to measure the document's effectiveness. A bonus of measuring effectiveness is that it could help us make purposeful improvements without pointless word-smithing.

I'm also thinking about doing an unconference workshop to hack on the CoC together at the upcoming 2018 Brigade Congress, so contact me if you're interested (tim | codefornashville.org).

Clarify position on anonymity and confidentiality of reporting

Recently I looked at CoCs from some organizations to see if they have anonymous reporting. It seems like this CoC creates a possibility of anonymous reporting (by phone or untraceable email), but not a specific mechanism for it. I also did not see any clarification of whether reports would stay confidential.

There are arguments for and against anonymity, confidentiality, and transparency. However, I think all parties would be well-served by having clear guidance before they are confronted with a situation or report.
