Cloud Posse

Terraform module to provision workspaces & configurations in Terraform Cloud via YAML configuration.

NOTE: Requires Terraform Cloud or Terraform Enterprise.

Usage

IMPORTANT: We do not pin modules to versions in our examples because of the difficulty of keeping the versions in the documentation in sync with the latest released versions. We highly recommend that in your code you pin the version to the exact version you are using so that your infrastructure remains stable, and update versions in a systematic way so that they do not catch you by surprise.

Also, because of a bug in the Terraform registry (hashicorp/terraform#21417), the registry shows many of our inputs as required when in fact they are optional. The table below correctly indicates which inputs are required.

Here's how to invoke this example module in your projects:

Examples

Here is an example of using this module:

We use YAML for the configuration files in order to separate configuration settings from business logic. It's also a portable format that can be used across multiple tools. Our convention is to name files by $env-$stage.yaml (e.g. ue2-testing.yaml), so for example an $env could be ue2 (for us-east-2) and the $stage might be testing. Workspace names are derived from the $env-$stage-$project, which looks like ue2-testing-eks.

How are you folks using complex types in your project variables?

Describe the Bug

Using complex types in project vars (lists or maps) seems to break the variables module for project.variables.

Using complex types breaks in a couple ways:

  1. Due to type constraints around the map type, project_values will error with "map elements must have the same type" if project values includes any non-primitive types.
  2. Once past that issue however, the jsonencode in modules/variables/main.tf causes another runtime error (see screenshot below):

The true and false result expressions must have consistent types. The given
expressions are string and tuple, respectively.

It seems like this would be something that ya'll would have run into or maybe I'm going about it wrong. Figured I'd open up an issue to discuss.

Expected Behavior

I expect a project's vars to support maps and lists.

Steps to Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Updates a project's vars section in yaml to have the following in your config project:
instance_types:
  - "m5.xlarge"
  1. Push the change
  2. See TFC error with the issue outlined above in #1.
  3. If you want to go further, update to use the gowiem-updates branch, push the change, and see the issue above in #2.

Additional Context

Just wondering if this is a bug or if this is some issue on my end that I'm not understanding. Happy to work through a fix if this is a bug and we can define a path forward.

structured_run_output_enabled = ???

Describe the Feature

We are missing the option to set structured_run_output_enabled as a variable to the workspace module.

Expected Behavior

To be able to set structured_run_output_enabled = false

Use Case

All my terraform cloud workspaces use Structured Run Output as it is by default true for resource "tfe_workspace"

Describe Ideal Solution

The ideal solution is just to propagate variables from the workspace module all up to the module

Additional Context

As for now, this module as the source on the registry is unusable for me, because I need to manually then change all workspaces and every time repeat same process when I have changes on the-config

Describe the Feature

To have terraform cloud automatically find workspaces to use with terraform workspace on the CLI, you configure it with a prefix:

terraform-tfe-cloud-infrastructure-automation puts the environment as a prefix. For example ue2. In order for terraform to find the workspaces by prefix, the environment would have to be used:

      prefix = "ue2-"
    }

Project name as a prefix seems like a more expected prefix to support this behavior.

Expected Behavior

Workspace pattern is {project}-{stage}-{env} instead of {env}-{stage}-{project}. Essentially a reversed order -- least specific to most specific.

Use Case

To be able to use terraform workspace select to select a workspace by prefix.

Describe Ideal Solution

That the template used to set the workspace name is configurable.

Alternatives Considered

Using the env (ex ue2-) as a prefix. This doesn't work well because multiple, unrelated projects are on the same environment.
