Crackers are made out of black kevlar thread that has been twisted together. They are all hand-made, so lengths vary, but they aim to be 6” long unless otherwise requested. The kevlar thread is very resilient, and though it will wear out eventually, has a long life. This will provide thousands of cracks for hobbyist whip crackers and professionals alike. Though, like all crackers, their life will quickly diminish when used to cut through objects.

They are attached to the fall using a cow hitch that has been passed through the center of the fall using a micro lacing needle. These can be undone without any special equipment; however, if you aim to replace the cracker and don’t have a lacing needle you will have difficulties. Contact us for recommended methods of replacing the cracker without special tools.

For minor repairs such as: replacing falls, attaching crackers, or repairing scratches to the wax coating we can recommend DIY fixes. Chances are you can make these repairs yourself with a little advice and common tools. If you would rather send your whip in for repair anyway, no worries! A fall replacement and new cracker is $20 plus shipping. Fresh waxing is $25. For anything else contact us and we can arrange a price based on your needs.

The core is a thin steel rod inserted into a sinker cord. This core is shot-loaded if requested and thatched to the rod using artificial sinew. The handle can be any length desired though 8-10 inches is standard with 12 inches being the rare exception. The core is then bolstered before being encased in the first belly.

The final overlay is the only part of your whip that can be seen from the exterior. It’s the layer where we can have the most fun with color combinations. This is where your color choice, handle design, and thong pattern really shine and is the characteristic that makes nylon whips truly unique. From vibrant colors, unique patterns, earth tones, black and white, or solid colors we can accommodate almost any desire. If you have any questions, reach out to us. Since November of 2020, the thong is always braided in whipmaker’s plait in a method that avoids the dreaded “double-strand”. For any whips before this date that are still in stock, there may be a “double-strand” where a strand has been dropped. This is very common in whips and is simply a characteristic of the standard plaiting method Gerrit learned originally. To the untrained eye, it is hardly noticeable. If anyone does notice it, it is a great opportunity to bore all your friends with your knowledge on the construction of a whip. (Or is that just what Gerrit does?)

The heel knot is what covers the base of your whip and adds a foundation to keep your hand from sliding off the handle. There are several knot combinations available to use here, each providing equal support. The choice between which knot you want is purely aesthetic.

The transition knot is an optional knot to add where the handle meets the thong. The goal of this knot is to hide the changes the plaiting makes during this transition. This isn’t necessary in all cases though, as it has little physical importance to the structure of the whip. Gerrit himself goes back in forth on whether or not to add this knot depending on the braiding on the handle. That said, in any whip where the handle braiding doesn’t match the thong it is highly recommended to hide this transition. When the handle colors don’t match the colors of the thong the transition knot is necessary, there’s no way to make that transition pretty and we need to hide it.

Make the order form on the custom bullwhip section into a auto-generated form. The user will fill in their order using drop down menus or typed in choices. This will then generate an order form for their bullwhip.

Whips are ended in a standard four point fall hitch that encompasses the fall. The final hitch is passed up under the other 3 hitches and the fall itself, ensuring the knot will hold tightly throughout the life of the whip. This creates the tightest ending to the thong allowing for the smoothest transition possible.

Due to the nature of tying this knot, any whips sent in for repairs where: the fall hitch has been removed, the knot untied, or other situations where the fall hitch has been altered, the whip may lose an inch or two of the overall length to retie. Of course, this is avoided at all costs and we will notify you before this happens.

The falls themselves are a single strand spliced into itself with the internal portion is half the length of the exterior. This allows for a continued taper in the fall itself ending your whip in a single nylon strand. The fall is then attached above the fall hitch and then subsequently tied on with the fall hitch itself.

The fall along with the cracker are the only two parts of a whip that will wear out over time. These can be replaced without untying the fall hitch completely and it is recommended that you never untie the fall hitch unless absolutely necessary. Please see our repairs section if you are not comfortable making these repairs yourself.
