curriculum-notebooks's Issues

Spreadsheet Suggestions

TechnologyStudies/ComputingScience/Courses/spreadsheet-1.ipynb

  • We can hyperlink to the Alberta CTS curriculum at the beginning of the notebook. Not sure if you need the list the outcomes at the end.

  • Is there suppose to be hyperlink here? As an alternative to these tasks, you may instead complete the [T4T INF1060 activities].

  • Wondering if there is way to make a checklist for each of the tasks?

  • At the the beginning of the course, it says " This course will make use of online spreadsheets such as Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel or EtherCalc. Then you will be able to use data from spreadsheets in the next notebook."

  • Microsoft Excel exercises/spreadsheets are not mentioned in the rest of the notebook

  • Method C. Yes is it Callysto Hub.... but I am wondering if we can say also say using a Jupyter Notebook. If so, maybe insert a video what is a Jupyter Notebook https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiTSRuSXnUM

Add flag to tell Travis to ignore a notebook or cell

Some notebooks have cells which should intentionally fail, such as French-Verb-Conjugation.ipynb. Rather than programming every small unusual case into Travis’ config we want a flag embedded in the notebook which tells Travis to ignore that notebook or cell. Furthermore this flag should be well documented and easily available to our devs.

Science/LightOpticalSystems/light-optical-systems.ipynb animations not rendering

A few issues with this notebook:

  1. animations are not rendering properly - when cell is executed gives blank output in IFrame. Perhaps related to having separate .js and .html files.
  2. most of the dependencies listed are not actually used in the notebook so many of these can be removed.
  3. there's very few lines of code in this notebook so hide/show code functionality is not needed.

Impressive work!

  • error message, see picture

  • Where would you like the user to put there input for this question? This appeals for similar type of questions in this notebook.
    Screenshot 2023-08-25 at 11 46 07 AM

  • This may require further explanation
    Screenshot 2023-08-25 at 11 51 55 AM

  • Highlight in red, that the student will get receive an error message for this exercise. In the following exercise, maybe further explain why a floating value is necessary to avoid the error.

  • I think to break up the text, maybe insert a video. :) Binary Section, maybe you can include this video. It includes some extra information but I think it is good to include all of it, up to you.

  • hexadecimals and web-colours Video time again :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c56x1aj2CPA

  • I think W3 schools is an amazing resource!! Maybe it should be more explicitly explained here
    Screenshot 2023-08-25 at 12 12 49 PM

  • I find when Python libraries are mentioned it does not really the highlight how powerful they are or how it makes programming easier. Wondering if we can bring more attention to this part of the notebook, as it is significant!

Data and Sinusoidal Functions notebook

User reported issue in the Data and Sinusoidal Functions notebook - a mistake in the model for the height of the pendulum. See screenshot for correction. Issue involved use of parentheses for the phase shift as well as the value for the period.

Geogebra in Reflections Notebook is Broken

Description of the Issue

The geogebra cells are frozen.
<script src="https://cdn.geogebra.org/apps/deployggb.js"></script> is used to deploy geogebra in the notebook.
The notebook was working when it was origionally committed to master and has been broken sometime since. We need to be careful to maintain backwards compatibility in nbplus so we can avoid breaking notebooks in master.

To Reproduce

"run all cells" in /Mathematics/Reflections/reflections.ipynb in the master branch.

Epcor Daily Water Report Error

The Science/concentration-and-ph.ipynb notebook is broken.

After "run all" cells it returns: <urlopen error [SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed (_ssl.c:852)>

If the database is no longer available perhaps we could remove those cells or find an alternative database. Hopefully it is just a verification error, if so either leave a cell in the notebook with instructions for renewing the verification or have it auto-renew.

Update to Plotly 3.5.0 Broke Notebooks

You can recreate this issue with a simple "run all".

It looks like an issue with plotly 3.0.0 and above. They made non backwards compatible changes with the version updates, resulting in the following notebooks breaking:

  • Statistical Reasoning
  • Effects of Horizontal and Vertical Translations

@snimpids you are already familiar with the notebooks/code listed above so hopefully it would be quick for you to fix the errors.
