flip-my-lawn's Introduction

FlipMyLawn.com

Here in California, we can save water and money by converting our lawns to California native landscapes. Flip My Lawn was built to provide simple, easy-to-access estimates of these savings for all Californians. Please remember that these are only estimates and may be optimistic. Current imagery is from 2016. For more details about our approach, please take a look at our methodology.

Flip My Lawn is a joint effort of the California Data Collaborative and the University of California, Los Angeles. It is funded by an Innovative Conservation Program grant and built by ARGO.

flip-my-lawn's Issues

Making methodology more transparent

After demo-ing FlipMyLawn.com to the Civic Spark Fellows, it seemed worthwhile to link the methodology doc also in the actual estimates section to make that more clear. People might not go back up to the "what is..." section. Thinking it'd be good to add the text below in italics:

"Based on cost estimates of water, installation (considering rebates), and yard maintenance" (Methodology LINK -- remember these estimates may be optimistic)

Also FYI I changed the Methodology to say v1.1 rather than draft.

Clean up display of benefits

E.g. Large numbers with smaller description text, similar to KPIs.

Maybe add icons or figures (water drops, trees, lawnmowers, cars, etc)

Deep link to CLCA if possible

The CLCA website allows users to search (here).

Each city name has a numerical value associated with it. (View the page source and scroll down.)

These values can be included in the keywords key in the body of a post request to here.

We can check city names returned by our geocoder against a list of city names from CLCA. If there's a match, we can link directly to the local contractors, otherwise we can link to the search page.

Thinking we should save this to the end and only implement the deep linking time permitting.

Example address under the search bar

As a non-California native who is not as familiar with CA addressing, it would be nice to have a quick way to see the tool in action by taking me to a quick example address.

Perhaps a random address generator can also serve as a great twitter bot

This way the tool can be demonstrated to wider audiences.

This is squarely in the nice to have bucket.
