What it is:

An implementation of PICO-8's api in LÖVE

Why:

For a fun challenge!
Allow standalone publishing of PICO-8 games on other platforms

No arbitrary cpu or memory limitations

What it isn't:

A replacement for PICO-8
A perfect replica
No dev tools, no image editor, map editor, sfx editor, music editor
No modifying or saving carts
Not memory compatible with PICO-8

Differences:

Uses floating point numbers not fixed point
Uses LuaJIT not lua 5.2
Memory layout is not complete

Extra features:

ipairs(), pairs() standard lua functions
assert(expr,message) if expr is not true then errors with message
error(message) bluescreens with an error message
warning(message) prints warning and stacktrace to console
setfps(fps) changes the consoles framerate
_keyup, _keydown, _textinput allow using direct keyboard input

Android Packaging:

Replace nocart.p8 with your game, since this is the default cartridge on boot. Text P8 or PNG P8.PNG is supported.
Follow the steps at Android Game Packaging
An additional step when editing AndroidManifest.xml is to remove android:screenOrientation="landscape" if you would like your game to support orientation rotation (Portrait and Landscape)

Help command not implemented

When I try to run the help command, it says "Help is not implemented yet". It's really not implemented or is an error?

Loading game p8 cartridge does not support path outside picolove folder: cart.lua:211: Unable to open: /home/.../game.p8

Every time I try to load a game with picolove from the picolove folder:
love . /home/path/to/my/game.p8
I get:

cart.lua:211: Unable to open: /home/path/to/my/game.p8

I also tried relative paths, to no use.
My only solution was to put the folder containg my game.p8 inside the cloned picolove repository, and access it relatively!
love . Games/game.p8

(then I got #24 but that's another issue)

Isn't there any way to access games elsewhere? What if the picolove is zipped? We cannot even add new files in the picolove folder in this case!

Games that cause PICO-8 to hang cause picolove to freeze

For example, jumping out of the playfield in cast will crash picolove.

Should I update the link to picolove?

As the original picolove repository appears to be dead, I'm thinking of changing the link on the awesome-PICO-8} to this repo.

Do you think it's a good a idea?

printh was removed from the original picolove. It means when you have a w.i.p. and you try to export it to löve, if will fail.

Extended character glyphs not supported

They are encoded as ASCII characters 128 through 153

api.stat(34) always return 0

api.stat(34) uses a bit-and operation instead of a bit-or operation, resulting in always returning 0.

Some games are very slow

I have been testing this, and I have noticed some games are VERY slow, running at slideshow speeds on the Pi3, even if CPU usage is high (~60% according to TOP) but not exceeding.
For example, Rainmaker:

How to Port Pico 8 Game to iOS/Android and some Issues.

Hello I tried to port my Pico-8 to LÖVE2D. But I discover some issues. Hope this helps someone in the future :). Thanks for this great project 👍

Not loading the p8 file.

The program only loads fine if I use the png format exported with pico.
Ex: game.p8.png. Using the p8 file throws problems if the name is different
from nogame.p8

I have to force the filename in main.lua
line 120.

	filename = "test.p8.png"

This will solve the issue regarding loading the p8 file in a fused game. Needed for exporting to Android or iOS.

Missing time()

The time() function is missing.
I have to add the function in api.lua
line 32.

Only Android

The Löve engine support iOS too. But the code here only checks for Android when drawing the touch buttons.
in main.lua function love.load(argv).

I think the variable should be named something like mobile but for now this will do the trick.

Enable Full Screen

For Mobile phones you need to hide the status bar or will collide with the game interface. This is done in conf.lua adding

For changing the touch controls you need to change 2 functions. It will be helpful if the buttons and their areas were defined in a single place and not twice.

It's useful having a variable with the player touch buttons so these values can be easily modified if the game need it.

Missing Colors

Peach color (15) does not render. I created a test file for trying the colors associated with sprites.
The rough solution was changing this colors for another unused color in pico and then
change the color the unused color position with the peach values {255,204,170,255} in the palette={} table (line 5).

Crash on Mute Sound

If you mute the music on _init() it will crash. Because there is no sound before.
It can be fixed in the api.lua line 454.

Would it be possible to use https://github.com/samhocevar/z8lua for parsing Lua?

It would probably solve #23, for example.

Emojis map to the wrong glyphs

In the PICO-8 editor, you can insert glyphs directly by "writing" uppercase letters. For example, pressing shifth inserts the heart glyph. These glyphs are actually emojis – the heart glyph is represented in the .p8 file as ♥.

Note that you can also insert glyphs in strings with an escape sequence, and that seems to work fine. For example, you can insert the heart glyph with the escape sequence \135, which renders correctly in picolove.

However, when loading a PICO-8 cartridge file that has emojis in it, the emojis will display as the wrong glyph. For example, the heart emoji will be displayed as the \153 glyph, which you normally get with shiftz or ▥.

As far as I can see none of the emojis map to their correct glyph, and some of them map to multiple glyphs, probably because of multi-byte emojis.

Quick and simple test:

First column is just the escape sequence, second column is the key that (together with shift) inserts the glyph in the editor, third column is the result of the escape sequence and fourth column is the result of the emoji.

Compare to PICO-8's output:

GLES error on Raspberry Pi

Hi, I have opened a similar issue on the branch: https://github.com/picolove/picolove
but I believe this fork is more updated.

I have been trying to run picolove on the Raspberry Pi platform.
It's running raspbian and SDL2 is built with GLES2 support. Many SDL2 games work on it using the GLES2 renderer.
On the LÖVE side of things, the SuperToast demo works perfectly too.
Howeve, picolove gives me this:

Latency in playing sfx

I noticed there's a long time between the moment sfx is called and the moment the sound is actually played (about 1 second or so).

I'm not super familiar with this part of picolove but is there room for optimisation to reduce this latency? Are the sounds generated and cached in advance? If not, is it possible to do so?

I'm happy to help if anyone can point me in the right direction.

btn() and btnp() can't take emojis as arguments

In PICO-8, the following code:

Can't properly load Jelpi

nocart.p8 runs totally fine but when I type load jelpi.p8 it returns

So instead I change the main.lua file so it loads jelpi.p8 on startup
line 293: _load(argv[2] or 'jelpi.p8') and then it returns

That doesn't work either. I change the main.lua file again so it loads jelpi.p8.png instead
line 293: _load(argv[2] or 'jelpi.p8.png') and that returns

With the .png file it plays the first part of the music but crashes quickly after.

Also, to mention, picolove/picolove can't load jelpi.p8 either but it can load the .png version perfectly.

Any way to hotswap carts?

I am working on a game that has maps that are too big to fit onto one pico8 cart. I was wondering if by using the stop() command I could trigger an event that would load the next cart that is signified either by its name or in a table in main.lua or some other lua file.

api.tostr shifts upper part bits incorrectly

While adding unit tests for parts of api.lua I realized tostr with hex=true fails because the rshift shifts by 4 bits but it should shift by 16 bits (2 bytes)

This is an assertion that tiles+shared==128*64, but in my cart apparently tiles==640 and shared==4096, and 640+4096==4736. Not sure how that's possible though.
