blobs.gg's Issues

Allow servers to show up in search results

The emoji search should be expanded to allow searching for servers.

The servers should probably be displayed in their own section, but further details need to be discussed and experimented with to find a solution that works well for us.

Allow filtering search results

Search results should in the future be filterable by the following criteria (feedback welcome in this issue):

  • Animated or static emoji only
  • Official or unofficial blobs only
  • Non-Blob emoji (eg. official google emoji, ..)

Not optimized enough for production use

While the design motif of this repository is fascinating - the "completely empty room" paradigm is scarcely used and thus underappreciated - it comes with one downside. It's not fast enough.

The general principles of software design, both private and commercial, have taken a large turn in the last few years. The advent of such frameworks as Ruby on Rails encourage heavy applications, high intensity workloads and large amounts of data usage. I think the out-of-the-box design decision to subvert these problems by having literally no code at all is inspiring, both to the maintainers and aspiring software developers.

However, performance is its downfall. Consider this concerning graph:

Disturbing observations

This kind of runtime load is practically lethal to a practical production environment. In a business environment, such strain would be unacceptable. Therefore, if possible, we should consider rethinking our design to suit it better to production use.

Emoji count inaccurate

The Emoji Count on the website is inaccurate as of right now as it counts the community emotes as well when we only need to track the Offical Blob Emoji

Allow sorting server list by different criteria

In addition to the random selection of community servers there should be filters to sort by server size or emoji count, and other filters that can be thought of (feedback welcome in this issue).

Increase width of server modals to allow longer server names

Currently any server names which use more than two or three words are cut off, making it harder to tell what a servers name is and what it's contents might be.

This can be seen on the test page: Nitro Thinking Blobs is cut off to Nitro Thinking ...

In the future this will also affect the official Blob Servers as we'll transition away from having numerical IDs to names, eg. Blob Emoji Animals:
