Instructions I followed for C# .NET

(based on the Getting Started Guide: http://developer.affectiva.com/v3/windows/)

Download and run the SDK installer (http://developer.affectiva.com/downloads/)
Create a Visual Studio C# Console Application project
Change the project from "Any CPU" to "x86" or "x64" depending on which SDK you installed (see: http://stackoverflow.com/a/10196549)
Add assembly references to the project (see: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wkze6zky.aspx) 1.
