I had previously tried Android Localizationer, and that had pretty much the same issue: westlinkin/AndroidLocalizationer#17 - it was an encoding issue.

I tried to integrate Androlate in my app as specified in the README.md but gradle fails to found the v0.3 on jcenter.
Jcenter is deprecated since March 31, 2021, maybe we can found your library elsewhere? I did not find it on mavenCentral though.
However, the v0.2 as used in your sample app is well found but it fails on missing gradle annotations (see below). For info, I'm using gradle v7.5.

  - In plugin 'androlate' type 'com.github.ayvazj.gradle.plugins.androlate.AndrolateTranslateTask' properties 'JSON_FACTORY', 'androlate', 'httpTransport' and 'translateClient' are missing an input or output annotation.
    
    Reason: A property without annotation isn't considered during up-to-date checking.
    
    Possible solutions:
      1. Add an input or output annotation.
      2. Mark it as @Internal.
