rumba-plus's Introduction

RUMBA+

version license donate

RUMBA+ is an updated version of the RUMBA 3D Printer control board, originally developed by RepRapDiscount.

The RUMBA+ update is designed to address several shortcomings with the original design, and improve on the otherwise solid framework it presents. More information on RUMBA is available on the RepRapWiki page here.

Some of the key improvements in the RUMBA+ design include:

  • Full 12/24V Compatibility (original RUMBA had 16V limit on bed)
  • Better, logic-level MOSFETs which generate less heat (can handle higher currents + safer & more reliable)
  • Improved power supply circuitry, including:
    • 5V and 12V regulators completely overhauled for higher current + less heat
    • Automatic power-select between USB or 12/24V
  • Higher quality screw terminals for power input / heated bed (higher current rating + easier to work with heavy-gauge wire)
  • Dozens of smaller changes to improve reliability or performance - refer to the release page for a detailed change history.

RUMBA+ boards are for sale in the Aus3D shop. Additional documentation is available on the Aus3D wiki.

In keeping with the original RUMBA design, RUMBA+ is fully open source.

rumba-plus's Issues

16u2 DTR Pin mistmatch

DTR pin from 16u2 to reset ATmega2560 on serial connect doesn't match pinout in official Arduino Mega 2560 16u2 firmware. DTR pin is PB0 (pin 14) instead of PD7 (pin 13).

This means that the board won't automatically reset upon serial connection, making firmware upload or connection through a host program difficult.

Potential Solutions:

  1. Modify 16u2 firmware to match different pinout. This seems to be what RRD have done with their RUMBA 16u2 firmware, but this means different firmware from the Arduino Mega which is potentially confusing + requires ongoing maintenance.
  2. Change pinout to match Arduino Mega2560. Pins 13 and 14 are adjacent, and can be bridged to achieve same outcome on initial batch of boards.

Display connector picture update

I just installe dthe new board, and noticed the picture on the display connectors have an issue: the mark that shows the tab on the connector is on the wrong side. Took a few minutes to realize that was the issue. Thanks

[Question] AUX1 access

First of all, I love how you replaced the PTC fuses with blade ones. I was just about to do something like that myself. Thanks so much.

My question is about the access to RX0 and TX0 pins, the ones that are labeled as AUX1 on RAMPS 1.4. I noticed you wired the pins RXD0 and TXD0 to USB. Are those the same pins I should use?
I want to do something like this
Where it says "MKS TFT". That's the connector I want to add. I just dont know which ports RX and TX should I use in your project. Can you help me?

Also, sorry for the bad english and thanks again for the project.

BOM incorrect part numbers

BOM for v1.4 has a few components with incorrect part numbers. These have been corrected during assembly but need to be folded back into the BOM (and Altium schematic too probably).

Incorrect parts are:

  • C10
  • R19
  • R5
  • R56

16u2 ICSP header clearance

Programming the 16u2 is tricky because the 5V header physically interferes with connecting to the ICSP header.

Increasing spacing between ISP2 and 5V headers slightly should fix problem.

USB connectivity

Happy to see someone updating this board. I am on my 3rd rumba and have to change them because of the USB connectivity issues. Is this being addressed on this board?

[Request] New main power connectors

Hi,
I'm going to make some of this boards, but I actually disagree with this choice for the Bed and PSU connectors. Instead i found very reliable the Duet's ones, with this model number: TJ952-00.
Do you think that could be possible to modify the board in order to use these?
Thanks you for doing the hard work here providing us a very good board!

TX/RX Pins on Exp 3 - QUESTION

Been trying to connect the Wifi Backpack from Panucatt to the board. I can connect but seems like I cannot make it communicate with he rumba+.

The documentation says pin 11 and 12 should be tx rx. However, read here in other question that is pin 13 and 14. Not sure which one should use.

Also, not sure what changes is marlin are needed to make this work.

Appreciate your help. Thanks
