There's a reason for the use of [class=paragraph]. The rule is that if any other role is defined on the paragraph, it will not appear as a lead paragraph (instead, it requires an explicit .lead role).

This is something that I think could (and should) be addressed in the next gen HTML converter. We do it the way we do it here to retain backwards compatibility, but the next gen HTML converter is green fields.
