Perhaps look into a registration page of its own. That way you can have lots of stuff for them to fill out like API keys and what not.

Steps to reproduce:
Try with username under 5 characters
Change to a longer one (At this point the error should clear)
Register

Open requesting a second verification mail after entering in a false one before I received 2 emails to the new (2nd) address provided. Upon doing that again I receive 3 emails to the new (3rd) address provided

At a later point you'll want to add some forum of captcha to any public facing options for submitting data.
This will help mitigate the damage done by bot attacks that commonly spam comments, registration, and mail scripts.
You'd be surprised how easily they can cause MySQL to bring down the entire server.
