A work around is that you can set downloaded episodes auto added to the queue

Well yeah, I wrote about this in the original post. This however doesn't work really well as a workaround, for example when hoarding podcasts in bulk, be it to catch up with current episode over a longer period of time while simultaneously listening to new episodes of other podcasts or simply downloading a couple extra to listen to when staying offline for whatever reason.

Putting an episode into the queue is for listening to it quite soon. Downloading one however is for just keeping it at hand for some time either soon or later. If queueing automatically downloaded episodes then you wouldn't have to worry about listening to the recently enqueued ones while on limited data, because the app would make sure they are readily available offline in phone storage.

If you disable downloading episodes using mobile network (see settings->download at the bottom) then episodes added to queue will only download when connected to wifi. (Although I think it will ask each time what you want to do as you're not on wifi)

Like Matth said, AntennaPod already does download episodes added to the queue.

unless I'm doing something wrong, but for me "auto-download" downloads all episodes that show up in the inbox.

Then disable auto-download for the individual subscriptions (using multi-select)

but this, again, will not enable automatic downloads for the particular episodes I put into the queue. am I missing something?

also, auto-downloading of everything in the inbox defeats the purpose of the inbox

I also really wish I had this feature.

All I want is to tell AntennaPod "forget the queue. Operate off the Episodes list". The episodes list is the order I wish the queue was but it's impossible to configure AntennaPod to just have your queue always show the latest stuff in order. It's actually quite annoying.

If anyone has tips on what needs to be done I am considering forking the repo and working on this because it is the only thing wrecking an otherwise perfect podcast app

It is actually possible @JasonKeirstead. In the Queue screen just tap the overflow menu, tap 'Sort' and activate 'keep sorted'. Then pick your preferred sorting (e.g. date oldโ†’new). Make sure that you have

  • a refresh interval selected in the global settings and not deactivated feed updates for individual podcasts
  • auto-download enabled at global level & all podcasts and your cache limit is not blocking downloads.
