  • the world's 205 sovereign states (820 cards)
  • 59 territories, world regions, and other entities (103 cards)
  • 48 oceans and seas (48 cards, maps only)
  • 7 continents (7 cards, maps only)
  • for a total of 319 unique notes, 978 cards, 221 flags and 319 maps.

The deck is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Norwegian Bokmål, Czech, Russian, Dutch, Swedish, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Italian and Danish.

Table of contents

Features

The standard version of the deck comes with four note templates: Country - Capital, Capital - Country, Flag - Country, and Map - Country. An extended version is also available, with two additional note templates: Country - Flag and Country - Map.

Supplementary information

To help with memorisation and provide context while learning, most notes include extra information:

  • similar flags - e.g. Iceland = Norway (red background, blue cross)
  • governance information - e.g. Cayman Islands = Overseas territory of the United Kingdom
  • alternative and former country names - e.g. East Timor = Also known as Timor-Leste
  • additional capitals - e.g. Sucre, Bolivia = While Sucre is the constitutional capital, La Paz is the seat of government.
  • statehood information - e.g. Transnistria = Independent state claimed by Moldova.

Custom study

Anki's search feature, coupled with the deck's comprehensive tag structure, allows for the creation of filtered decks covering a wide range of learning goals and abilities. Here are some search queries you can use:

  • card:"Flag - Country" to learn flags and nothing else;
  • tag:UG::Sovereign_State to focus on sovereign states and exclude dependent territories, water bodies and continents;
  • -tag:"UG::Oceans+Seas" (with "-" in front of the filter) to learn everything except oceans, seas and other water bodies;
  • card:"Map - Country" tag:UG::Sovereign_State tag:UG::Europe to learn the location of Europe's sovereign states;
  • (card:"Country - Capital" or card:"Capital - Country") tag:UG::Sovereign_State to learn the capitals of the world's sovereign states;
  • tag:UG::North_America -tag:UG::Caribbean to focus on the countries in North America, but not in the Caribbean (i.e. those in Northern and Central America).

Getting started

First-time here? Welcome! 👋

In order to install and later upgrade Ultimate Geography, you'll need to first install an Anki add-on called CrowdAnki:

  1. Open Anki on your computer, go to the Tools menu and select Add-ons.
  2. In the dialog box, click on Get Add-ons... and paste in the code provided on this page.
  3. Click on OK to install the add-on, and then restart Anki.

You're now ready to install Ultimate Geography:

  1. Go to the Releases page.
  2. In the latest release's Assets section, download the ZIP archive of the version of the deck you'd like to use. You can choose between a standard and an extended version in a number of languages -- for instance, if you're after the standard German deck, download Ultimate_Geography_v[...]_DE.zip.
  3. Extract the content of the archive on your computer.
  4. Open Anki and make sure your devices are all synchronised.
  5. In the File menu, select CrowdAnki: Import from disk.
  6. Browse for and select the folder you extracted from the archive, which contains the deck's JSON file and media folder -- e.g. Ultimate Geography [DE].
  7. Don't change anything in the CrowdAnki Import Settings dialog box that opens -- just press OK to start the import. A dialog box should then confirm that the import was successful.

👉 To stay informed of new releases, make sure to watch this repository's releases.

Upgrading

The upgrade process is typically the same as the installation process explained in the previous section. However, some situations require extra care. As a general rule, always read the release notes carefully; they will likely tell you what to do or point you to a page that does.

First upgrade after APKG import

You may have initially installed Ultimate Geography by importing an APKG file. You may have downloaded such a file from this repository or from the deck's page on AnkiWeb, as this used to be the recommended installation process.

If you're in this situation and wish to upgrade, proceed as follows:

  1. Perform the Getting started steps exactly.
  2. You should end up with two decks: your original deck called "Ultimate Geography" and a new, duplicated deck called "Ultimate Geography_2". Unless you created some notes of your own, every card in your original deck should have moved automatically to the new deck and your original deck should now be empty. You can verify this in Anki's card browser.
  3. To get back to having a single deck, move any of your own cards out of the original deck and delete it. Then, rename the new deck to "Ultimate Geography". From here on, future upgrades will be seamless.

If you're upgrading from v3.3 or earlier, then you may want to additionally follow the instructions for the v4.0 release.

Keeping deck customisations

If you've made, or are thinking of making, any changes to your Ultimate Geography deck, check the Customising the deck section below to see what will happen to them the next time you upgrade, and whether you need to take any steps to preserve them.

Levelling up from standard to extended

Importing an extended deck on top of a standard deck is tricky and needs care. You may instead consider learning the extended deck from scratch. To do so, either:

  • remove the standard deck first by following the instructions in the Major version section below, or
  • import the extended deck in a separate Anki profile.

If you'd rather keep your progress, proceed as follows:

  1. Perform the Getting started steps exactly.
  2. Instead of a dialog box confirming that the import was successful, you'll see another dialog box titled Change Note Type. In the Cards section, set Change Flag - Country to: to "Flag - Country" (instead of "Country - Flag"), and set Change Map - Country to: to "Map - Country" (instead of "Flag - Country").
  3. Check that the other cards and fields map correctly and click on OK to start the import.

Major version

Major versions (e.g. v3.0) typically indicate that upgrading "the normal way" may lead to a significant loss of progress, or to the loss of some of the customisations you may have made to the deck that would normally be preserved. This can occur, for instance, when significant changes are made to the structure of the deck.

The release notes and upgrade instructions on the wiki will typically provide you with a way to upgrade to the major version without losing your progress. However, in some cases, the process can be daunting. 😰 If keeping your progress isn't worth the effort, or if you just feel like starting the deck again from scratch, then we recommend you perform a "clean import" as follows:

  1. Open Anki and make sure your devices are all synchronised.
  2. Delete the Ultimate Geography deck.
  3. In the Tools menu, select Manage Note Types, then delete the Ultimate Geography note type.
  4. In the Tools menu, select Check Database.
  5. Sync the changes with AnkiWeb and with all your devices.
  6. You can now follow the steps of the Getting started section to install the major version.

Deck structure

The notes are based on a note type called Ultimate Geography, which defines eight fields: Country, Country info, Capital, Capital info, Capital hint, Flag, Flag similarity, and Map.

The cards are generated by Anki on import based on four templates: Country - Capital, Capital - Country, Flag - Country, and Map - Country. The extended version of the deck includes two additional templates: Country - Flag and Country - Map.

The appearance of the cards is controlled solely with CSS; the content of the notes is free from HTML markup.

Every note is tagged. The tags, which are listed below by category, are prefixed with UG:: so they don't conflict with other decks. They can be used to create filtered decks for custom study.

  • Type - UG::Sovereign_State, UG::Oceans+Seas, UG::Continents
  • Continent - UG::Africa, UG::Asia, UG::Europe, UG::North_America, UG::Oceania, UG::South_America
  • Region - UG::Caribbean, UG::Middle_East, UG::Southeast_Asia, UG::European_Union, UG::Mediterranean, UG::East_Africa, UG::West_Africa

Customising the deck

Interested in making changes to the deck in Anki? Here's what you need to know.

Changes that are or can be preserved 💖

  • Adding your own cards and media files

    Go wild. 🌊 Upgrading will not affect any new cards you create, or any new media files you add to the newly added cards.

    If a duplicated deck is created on import, your own cards will stay in their original deck.

  • Moving cards into another deck

    Some people prefer to combine multiple decks into one to review them together.

    By default, CrowdAnki will move all the cards back into the Ultimate Geography deck on import. To prevent this behaviour and update the existing cards in place, make sure to tick the Do Not Move Existing Cards checkbox in the CrowdAnki Import Settings dialog box, when following the steps in the Getting started section.

    Note that if you had previously deleted the Ultimate Geography deck, it will be recreated and may contain new cards.

  • Changing the deck's options

    Deck options are, for instance, the number of new cards per day, the maximum number of reviews per day, etc.

    When importing the deck for the first time, CrowdAnki creates a new "option group" called Ultimate Geography (unless it already exists). If you've made any changes to this group's options, they will be reverted on import.

    To avoid losing your options, create your own option group and give it a distinctive name. After you upgrade, you'll just have to switch the deck back to this option group.

  • Customising the templates and styles

    Any edits you make to the built-in templates of the Ultimate Geography note type will be reverted on upgrade. Same goes with the CSS styles that are shared by all the templates.

    One way to work around this and preserve your changes is to first clone the note type and switch all the cards to the new note type in the Anki browser. You can then make your template and style changes in the cloned note type without affecting the original note type. The next time you upgrade, all the cards will switch back to the original note type, but you can easily switch them back to your customised note type in the Anki browser.

    Note that you may have to update your custom templates and styles afterwards to stay in line with the built-in templates.

    A word of caution ⚠️: the above workaround is not guaranteed to work, so you may want to back up your local deck before upgrading by first exporting it with CrowdAnki.

Changes that get reverted 😬

The changes listed below will be lost the next time you upgrade and there's no other solution than to make the changes again manually after the upgrade.

  • Renaming the deck or changing its description

    Upgrading always restores the deck's default name and description.

  • Editing the content of a note

    Examples:

    • adding a link to Wikipedia in the Country info field of Curaçao;
    • adding your own memoization hint to the Flag similarity field of Poland;
    • adding or removing a tag from a note;
    • renaming a tag.

    If you correct a typo or a mistake, don't forget to open an issue or a Pull Request so you don't lose your correction the next time you upgrade. 😉

  • Deleting a card

    Upgrading will bring the card back. If you don't want to learn a card at all or if you want to delay learning it, consider:

    • suspending or burying the card;
    • creating a filtered deck that doesn't include the card;
    • moving the card into an "icebox" deck and ticking the Do Not Move Existing Cards the next time you upgrade, as explained in the previous section, under Moving cards into another deck.
  • Adding or removing a template

    If you add your own template to the Ultimate Geography note type, you will lose it and all the cards created from it when you upgrade. During the upgrade, you will see a dialog box asking you to match your current templates to the deck's built-in templates. (This same dialog box appears when importing the extended deck on top of the standard deck.) Unfortunately, you will have not choice but to map your extra template to "Nothing". You can re-add it again after the upgrade, to recreate the cards, but your progress on those cards will be lost.

    If you remove a template, you will see the same dialog box when you upgrade. The template and its associated cards will then be recreated. You can easily remove the template again after the upgrade, if you so wish.

Changes that prevent upgrading ⛔

  • Adding a new field (population, currency, etc.)

    Adding a new field to the Ultimate Geography note type will prevent you from upgrading the deck entirely. When you'll try to import it again, Anki will likely error and you'll risk losing your entire progress. Hopefully Anki, CrowdAnki, Brain Brew, and UG will one day find a way to make this possible.

    Note that the technique of cloning the note type explained under Customising the templates and styles will not work here. If you've added a new field and are wanting to upgrade, you have no choice but to first remove the field from the note type.

    If you really know what you're doing, you could try exporting your deck with CrowdAnki, carefully merging the JSON file of the new version of the deck into your exported deck's JSON file, and then importing your deck back into Anki ... but if you're capable of this, your skills would be put to much better use contributing to CrowdAnki and Brain Brew! 😁

ultimate-geography's Issues

Adding 'Note ID'

Would you add a Note ID field and append it to all the cards so that it's possible to upgrade the deck in future iterations? I've seen it featured on medical school superdecks and it's helpful for upgrading cards with errata.

How to go back after having customised the deck

Just wondering if there's any process for trying to get the deck back to its original state after having (regrettably) tampered with it. I've tried clearing the tags after deleting it and re-downloading it etc but without success. Would really appreciate some help being able to properly use this awesome deck!

Check image licences

  • Audit licences.
  • Make sure all images are under a sufficiently permissive licence (public domain, Creative Commons, etc.); replace the ones that aren't.
  • Add section to LICENSE.md listing all image licences and attributions.

How can I tell which version of the deck I have?

Hey Axel,

Thank you very much for your work on this deck!

I'd like to upgrade the version of the deck that I'm using, because I don't think I have the most recent one. I might be missing something obvious, but how exactly can I tell which version of the deck I have?

screenshot from 2018-12-07 18-39-54

Rename image files

  • Use prefix to avoid conflicts with media from other decks.
  • Tidy things up with a naming convention.

Translate deck to German

Translations can be found in the de_wip branch. They'll need to be moved into the new CSV form of Anki Deck Manager and reviewed.

  • Move translations from JSON file in de_wip branch's to data.csv once deck is fully migrated to Anki Deck Manager. #66
  • Review translations #79
  • Mention German deck in README

Suggestions for new fields

From a comment on the shared deck's page:

The conclusion is that, to master this deck and to have a reasonably accurate world map in my head (which is the goal, no?), I really needed to also learn cards for Country->Flag and Country->Map relations too. Adding these cards to the deck forced me to verbally explain what each country's flag looks like and what countries they border.

Very true...

Country > Flag

If the idea is simply to display the flag in the answer, then people can create their own note template for this, like this person did. As I mention in the README, I don't think the deck should have more note templates than it already has so beginners don't feel overwhelmed.

Displaying only the flag in the answer, however, doesn't seem like it would make it easy to learn... Everyone would have to come up with their own way of describing each flag. One option could be to add a new field specifically for describing each flag in writing, in a formal (but concise) way. Vexillology could be an option, but it might be too obscure. Anyway, so the field would remain hidden for the user unless they create a note template for it.

Country > Map relations (i.e. bordering countries)

This could also be a good case for a new "secret" field. It could even be used the other way around: Map relations > Country. The definition of a bordering country might be a contentious point (i.e. do you include maritime borders?)

Add short location info to islands, microstates and small dependent territories

Islands, micro-nations and small dependent territories are the trickiest to remember. Some hints as to where they are located may help to differentiate them.

The location info should be added to the Country info field and consist of a short, consistent sentence. For islands, the sentence should mention the geographical subregion (e.g. Caribbean), the landforms (atoll, islet, island, small group of island, archipelago, etc.) and the number of islands if relevant (i.e. mainly if it's 2 or 3). For microstates and small dependent territories, the sentence should just be as succinct as possible (e.g. "on the North African coast of the Mediterranean Sea", "in Rome, Italy", "in Central Europe, between Switzerland and Austria", etc.) The word microstate should be included as well, since it isn't the case currently.

Provide more interesting country information for difficult cards

Discussion started in issue #11.

For non-sovereign states and, more generally, cards that are not easy to memorise, provide additional country information in the form of interesting, unique historical and geographical facts. The facts should be sourced from Wikipedia and written in such a way that they are unlikely to become outdated (if needed, specify the date the fact was added).

Country / Capital pronunciation

Great deck, thanks for sharing! Wondering if you have any plans to add audio pronunciations for countries/ capitals? It could be very helpful to have audio of how to pronounce difficult cities like "ljubljana" for example. I'm happy to help with this if it's of interest.

Replace map of the Baltic Sea

Reported in a comment on the shared deck's page:

Being from Denmark I couldn't help but noticed how horribly disfigured Denmark is on the map of the Baltic Sea. It turns out that the picture is actually of the now gone 'Ancylus Lake' and therefore over 10.000 years old. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltic_Sea#/media/File:Baltic_History_7500-BC.svg

Here's a better picture of the Baltic Sea with no name, maybe it's useful: http://www.nordregio.se/Global/Maps/Maps%20as%20pictures/Geographical%20scope/0731_Baltic%20Sea%20Region.png

The source and license of the suggested replacement map is unknown. Also, the map would require modification before being added to the deck.

In issue #1, I mention a Wikipedia category called Locator maps of seas. Although marked for improvement, the category does provide a reasonable locator map of the Baltic Sea, which could do for now: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Locator_maps_of_seas#/media/File:Locatie_Oostzee.PNG

Add continents

Hello. Firstly I want to thank you for this great deck.

The deck contains oceans and seas, would it be possible to also add continents?

My daughter is starting elementary school and they are first starting by studying continents, then moving on to countries.

Thanks!

Reduce width and height of SVG flags

In the editor, Anki displays the flags in their original, intrinsic size. It would be nice if they were all closer to 250px in height, like in the preview. Issue #8 must be resolved first.

Luxembourg Capital is Wrong(?)

The deck states that the Capital of Luxembourg is "Luxembourg", which is technically correct as far as I can see. However it is better known in English as "Luxembourg City".

When importing version 3.0 I get some additional decks

I downloaded the release 3.0 from GitHub and imported it. I got (I think - I've deleted them since) 5 decks in total. Is this on purpose? I did not see it documented.
I also wondered why the version 3.0 from GitHub has a different size than the download from AnkiWeb. Maybe these additional decks are the reason.

Errors when importing version 3.0

Hi, when importing a fresh version of 3.0 I get the following errors with Anki v2.1.5 and addons disabled. The result is that I'm left with a deck of only 199 cards.

1. Error when Importing

This is an error that pops up immediately upon importing the deck:

Updated 0 of 226 existing notes.
Some updates were ignored because note type has changed:
Map: New Zealand,,Wellington,,,<img src="ug-flag-new_zealand.svg" />,Australia (white stars, two more stars),<img src="ug-map-new_zealand.png" />
869 cards imported.

2. Viewing the newly imported deck in the browser

When I open the browser immediately after importing I get the following error:

If problems persist, please report the problem on our support site. Please copy and paste the information below into your report.

3. When running 'Check Database'

As suggested by the previous error message I then run a 'Check Database' and this produces the following output:

At this point I only have 199 cards remaining in the imported deck. The rest have been deleted or ignored.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Add hints for duplicate capitals

There's already a field for this, which is used only for two notes, Jamaica and Norfolk Island, which both have a capital named Kingston. I can spot two more shared capitals:

  • London: United Kingdom, England
  • Oranjestad: Aruba, Sint Eustatius

Nouakchott typo

"Nouakchot" should be "Nouakchott".
The current spelling appears to be a German variant.

I wanted audio for my UG deck so I manually checked places like dictionaries for the "Country" and "Capital" fields (including many obvious ones). That's why I'm quite sure this is the last typo. If you wanted the audio, sorry, I didn't check the licences as it was for personal use.

Also, note that I'm not familiar with GitHub (I update my deck with difference checker tools and the RSS release feed).

Define criteria for inclusion of non-sovereign states

On one hand, I feel like some notes are quite obscure, like Saba, Sint Eustatius, or Mount Athos, and on the other hand it seems like the deck is missing a few obvious ones, like Hawaii, Tasmania, or Svalbard. What makes a card worth adding?

  • Relying solely on governance status (e.g. overseas territory, etc.) is clearly not working as adding Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha is out of the question... and it doesn't cover Hawaii, Java, the Balkan Peninsula, etc.
  • General awareness would be ideal, but it's not easy to quantify and very arbitrary...
  • Perhaps a combination of surface area and population size?
  • Historical significance as well, maybe?
  • How practical it is to learn for an English speaker? Again... highly arbitrary.

List all available country info on the back of all cards

When studying info about countries I know nothing about (Burkina Faso anyone?), it is really annoying to ONLY get the currently relevant info (e.g., Ougadougou) on the back.

Why not show every fact the deck has about each country? Then I don't have to associate two random, floating words with each other but can start learning about flag and geographic location immediately while trying to form my metal connections...

South Sudan and Sudan

Firstly, great job!

It needs to be updated for these two countries: Sudan and South Sudan.

Change capital of Swaziland

Reported in a comment on the shared deck's page:

When I learned capital some years ago I memorised 'Mbabane' as the capital of Swaziland.
This deck says it's 'Lobamba', so I checked Wikipedia. It lists them both: Lobamba as legislative and Mbabane as executive. You could consider adding Mbabane or just a note explaining it like with South Africa :)

This is a left over from the original deck. Wikipedia does list Mbabane first on the Swaziland page, and calls Mbabane the "capital" on the city's page.

Lobamba is the " traditional, spiritual, and legislative capital". This should be mentioned in the Capital info field.

Add [country-map] and [country-flag] cards

Personally I’ve added them to my v1.0 deck and I’ve seen other people out there do the same thing.
Those cards work wondees since they force you to articulate stuff like “what are the bordering countries” and “what are the salient features of the flag” instead of just passively recognising them.

Thnx for a great deck!

Ease commiting after export with custom settings

After I make my edits and I export the deck as JSON, I get quite a lot of differences with the repository file that don't need to be commited.

Lines like 'crowdanki_uuid', 'deck_config_uuid', custom settings like new cards/reviews per day, the media file list (some files are reordered), the font, 'mid' value, marked cards - all these lines need to be reset by hand one by one when adding the file for commit.
This is really annoying when I want to commit just a few changes to the deck.

I was about to write a script to do this but I found no easy way to git add by line programmatically. How do you deal with this problem?

If there was a way to split the file into multiple parts so that the card info is separated from the settings, I could .gitignore the other files but currently that's impossible.

Is there a path to upgrade from v1.0?

Really, I'll take just about any path, even if it is difficult. I'd prefer not to have to start the process over, even though i'd get a lot of quick wins :-)

On the capital of Palau

I wanted to look up how to pronounce Ngerulmud, but I’ve fallen into a sort of rabbit hole. It turns out that, for small island nations, there is sometimes an ambiguity in exactly what should be considered the capital.

The problem is that the legal capital may be a settlement that does not correspond to any administrative division. E.g. the legal capital of American Samoa is Fagatogo -- it says so in their constitution -- but most references, including the existing card, say Pago Pago, because that's the smallest administrative unit that contains the capital.

As far as I can tell, all the existing cards for countries with this problem – at least American Samoa, Kiribati, and the Northern Mariana Islands – use the smallest administrative division. The card for Palau is the only exception; it uses the name of the settlement (Ngerulmud) instead of the name of the administrative division (Melekeok).

I’d like to suggest that an ultimate geography deck should have a policy – administrative division or settlement name – and apply it consistently. In practical terms that would mean either preferring administrative divisions, and changing the card for the capital of Palau, or settling on settlement names, and changing the cards (at least) for American Samoa, Kiribati, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Country and Capital Card Template Update to Mimic Cloze

Let me start by saying that perhaps this is just an issue I have faced.

I've always had an issue where I would misread "Capital" as "Country" and vice versa, when speeding through the cards. I would either spend a long time staring at the 'Capital' in complete bewilderment trying to work out it's supposed 'Country' before realising my mistake, or I would mistake similar looking/sounding Countries and Capitals like "Belarus" and "Belgrade" and give the wrong answer because of this. I was always annoyed by this because I did genuinely know the answer but I felt bad about this mistake and marking the answer as Good nonetheless.

So I changed my Card Templates to mimic a cloze deletion.

Country -> Capital
image

Capital -> Country
image

This way the Countries are always on the top and the capitals are always on the bottom. This got rid of this issue immediately and I believe it has helped my recall as a result. You can ignore the colours and size of "Country" and "Capital", as well as any cosmetic change I have made as a part of this. The style of a cloze deletion is all I am really advocating for. The "???" can also be changed to directly copy the style of a cloze "[...]" in blue.

Sidenote: the "Show Map" button is just made by the {{#Map}}<br>{{hint:Map}}{{/Map}} and I only rarely click it when I get a new card which I have never heard of, do not know the location, and am not getting the Map card today. Rather than clicking edit and looking at the map, which I used to do a lot (which is seemingly impossible in AnkiDroid). This helps better associate it in my mind with it's neighbours and learn faster.

Review and improve maps

  • Check quality and file size of all maps and replace the worst ones.
  • Prefer SVG or PNG format rather than JPEG.
  • Add source URLs and attributions to LICENCE file.
