Hello, a developer said about Native client: "..... it requires running separate nodejs client in the background performing as a man in the middle https://github.com/andy-portmen/native-client this is a 30MB full embedded chrome running all the time :( "

so I have a few questions please:

by reading the changelog of a previous version of native client, I discover that we are supposed to install nodejs: "It is recommended to have NodeJS installed on your system to use the NodeJS-based native clients (windows.zip, linux.zip , and mac.zip)."

so our beloved Open-in-vlc does not work 100% if nodejs is not installed? native client is not enough? do we have to install native client and nodejs at the same time? I tried to install nodejs but nodejs tells me nodejs is no longer compatible with windows 7 os unfortunately.....

My second question please, is this true native client, or nodejs will remain permanently active in the background even when you close the web browser or vlc player? I ask the question because my laptop is old and weak and manufactured in 2012 so I have to save resources and avoid background processes.....

Because the extension always shows me 2 m3u8 streams, so i choose a random m3u8 stream, and even in the media info section in vlc, i can't knows if i'm playing the video with the highest quality or the lowest quality so i can make mistake and play a stream that has the highest quality.....

i have an old laptop, old hard drive, not very powerful connection, so it is important for me and probably for many other people not to make a mistake and to be able to easily download the video with the worst quality to preserve our bandwidth, time, hard drive durability, battery, energy.....

and so it will be great please to add a video quality indicator on the m3u8 streams, maybe by adding an option like the one in the 3DYD youtube source plugin which has an option: "probe each stream found during the analysis (probe limit per stream (milliseconds) : 300 to detect the video quality and automatically display the desired video quality, thank you very much !

The problem is that we can't use Open-in-vlc with youtube videos, with mail.ru videos :

vlc wouldnt run using path to C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe
Dont know why, maybe its permissions, maybe space between program and files. Whatever.

Just copied entire vlc folder to c:\programs folder, change path in addon to C:\Programy\VLC\vlc.exe without quotes!
done just that and now it works in both firefox and chrome. you're welcome.

EDIT: works even better with potplayer! just switch path from vlc to pot and works.

Hello, the new awesome version of our beloved Open-in-vlc works with many sites, my concern is that I like to use one or 2 streaming platforms which offer standard 480p video quality, Open-in-vlc worked with all the media players on this streaming site but recently it no longer works with the first 2 media players which offer standard quality needed because my sister uses a lot of HDMI and wifi may become weak, ..... so I discovered a sensational amazing secret which allowed me to solve this problem by watching more than 20 videos of vidmoly platform without problems directly in vlc player while it was impossible to watch video in vlc or potplayer with the classic method:

my secret is to playback the video from the first video player on this site, for example:

I pause the video then I open "chrome://media-internals/", I look for the box : "kFrameUrl" and I open the video in a new window with this new link the real original link:

then I playback the video and I choose an m3u8 link detected by Open-in-vlc and I choose open with vlc and it works! I was able to watch several videos from this streaming platform with VLC whereas it was impossible with the classic method!

I receive a warning I cannot playback the video i.e. the original link of the video so it is impossible for Open-in-vlc to detect the m3u8 link......I try again after hours of inactivity and restarting my router and it works again, I can playback the video of the kFrameUrl then I try again and the video kFrameUrl is blocked again so it is impossible to detect the m3u8 link and send it to vlc......

I also found a discussion where it talks about making a web extension for SMPplayer to playback videos directly in SMPlayer and a developer explained :

SMPlayer really needs https://sourceforge.net/p/smplayer/feature-requests/742/ At the very least we need a way of passing the -referrer header. A lot of video content on the web won't play without it. Ideally smplayer would just pass all the parameters it doesn't recognize to underlying player (mpv/mplayer)"

So we thank you very much Mr @andy-portmen for this capital extension saver lifer and I have a request please: the apocalypse nightmare manifest v3 which weakens the extensions affects the chrome extensions, but mozilla (and supermium browser and brave browser and catsxp browsers and palemoon and basilisk browsers) decide to challenge the mastodon google and keep support of the manifest v2, we know that the firefox store also adopts the manifest v3 and in same timefirefox store keep the support of the manifest v2 and our wish please is to keep manifest V2 or make the extension for firefox browser compatible with the manifest v2 because certainly the manifest V2 extension for firefox is more powerful and more efficient and will have more features and options than the limited chrome manifest v3 extensions for chrome and chromium browsers!

Hi there, thanks for making this wonderful addon!
Just a tiny problem: I have unticked the"Allow only one instance" and "use only one instance when started from file manager" checkboxes, but all videos opened via open-in-vlc from my Chrome still seem to share only one instance. New videos just keep covering the previous one.
When i open local video files, they can display in separate instances. If I keep these instances on and open a video via open-in-vlc, it will also display in a new instance without disturbing the local videos. But if I open a second video via open-in-vlc, it will then replace the previous one, and still, local ones are not disturbed. In the playlist view, new videos can be seen after previous ones.
Hope this is just some setting issue! Really need multiple instance anywhere!! Thanks a lot again!!!!!!!!!!

I have a set top box which provides a web interface.
There are links on the page with URLs like:

When i click on the links it saves a file with an extension of m3u8.

Using wget I can see that the server returns a content type of application/x-mpegurl

Would it be possible to be able to open this with your extension?

Hello, I'm really not trying to be spoiled and boring but really it's vital after my laptop broke down and I'm currently using my old laptop made in 2012 windows 7 32 bits so heavy and weak cpu and impossible to watch streaming with heavy web browser that lags freeze, so the life saver solution is our beloved Open-in-vlc :)

The only problem is recently, many streaming platforms used by my favorite streaming sites no longer put the standard 360p or 480p quality and my wifi connection can become weak because many members of my family watch videos, HDMI .....

so it is vital for me to use the standard 480p video quality for a stable playback but the standard 480p video quality no longer exists in the streaming platforms except on the " vidmoly.to " platform which is the first media player in the " voiranime " site and the third media player in the " french anime " site .....

Open-in-vlc worked once or twice with vidmoly then vidmoly activates a defense mechanism and vidmoly has succeeded to block Open-in-vlc and we hope this major problem will be fixed please, thank you very much!

I searched, tested, experimented.....and recently I found a rare secret, I playback the vidmoly embed video, then I open :

and I search for:

kFrameUrl

and i copy and open the kFrameUrl link and I was able to watch about thirty vidmoly videos with vlc player using Open-in-vlc because i discovered the real original link of the embed vidmoly video but apparently, the vidmoly administrators discovered my secret and blocked my trick which no longer works because vidmoly now blocks the kFrameUrl link :(

so our dream please is a solution to the complex problem of vidmoly, thank you very much :)

Not sure why Andy but VLC at least with higher res on the raspberry pi will only play when full screen.
Your addon is brilliant for the pi as chromium runs vid extremely badly and any modern resolution format nearing full 1080p 60fps suffers anywhere from micro stutters to huge stutters.

Is it possible to launch VLC fullscreen cmdline linux vlc -f or vlc --fullscreen but don't know what you have avail through an api.
Also is it possible to stop the video in chromium as the same time?

Directly add user:password credentials to link when opening from ftp. VLC doesn't remember credentials, and implementing here would be really useful.

Sometimes, some sites split up videos to multiple segments and opening them one by one would be a hassle. Here's an example of a video split to multiple segments.

It would be awesome if it's possible to save the list into a m3u8 (or text) file and open it via VLC instead of opening a new URL every 3/5 seconds.

Is it normal behavior for the VLC player to close when the Firefox browser is closed? I experience this issue only when I use the add-on to open VLC. If I manually copy a video link and open VLC manually to play the link, the player remains open if I close the browser.

Since today, when opening a stream in VLC I got an error displayed. The stream is playing but without the title beeing passed. Yesterday it worked fine. Only occures when VLC Player is already opened to see the error message.

I try to debug why the page title isnt used for m3u8 videos on the page I am using it (Vidoza)
But when downloading the repo und loading V3 as unzipped extension in chrome, the extensive cant communicate with the native client. No matter how often I reinstall the nativ and the extension.
The extension-console giving me following error:
Unchecked runtime.lastError: Access to the specified native messaging host is forbidden.

How can I use the extension localy to debug and add additional featues?

!I said previously in the past i could no longer preview video streaming with Cat-catch extension (with vlc and potplayer) and I tried the Open-in-vlc extension which also doesn't work.....

but now I just updated the open-in-vlc extension which had an update by adding the referrer and it works !!! I can preview streaming videos from my favorite streaming site with oiur beloved Open- in- vlc extension !!!!

so , no need for a heavy web browser, no more noisy fans, it's ecological and it saves millions of people and old machines like my 2012 laptop which lags frezze when i watch streaming video but no more lag freezes with our beloved Open-in-vlc where I can even increase the network buffer to 60 seconds so stable streaming despite weak internet!! .....

Open-in-vlc allows us to avoid waiting for the download to finish and more recently streaming sites have changed their defense mechanism and streaming protocol.... and it becomes almost impossible to download hls streaming videos (I I tried several extensions, download manager.....but almost impossible to download videos except with the stream recorder extension in the chrome store but it is not open source and I prefer to use open source extensions, it is why I informed Mr Chandler the wonderful developer of Live-stream-donwloader of this bug and we hope it will be fixed soon :)

So we please suggest putting Paypal or Buymecoffe links or others so that users around the world support this mangifique project which is useful for the planet because it allows old laptops to still work and allows millions of people to enjoy entertainment or academic videos despite an old or weak processor or weak internet, thank you very much !

In this extension if I change application path (like: "C:\Program Files\MPC-HC\mpc-hc64.exe") in option it actually works for other players.
But in your extension if I do the same it doesn't work for other players.

So my request is to take code from that project (https://github.com/belaviyo/send-to-vlc) and make a separate extension for MPC-HC. It will be like Open in MPC-HC.

Hello, Brave browser (and Catsxp browser which seems based on open-source brave browser) defies the mastodon google and keeps the support of manifest v2 provided that developers continue to update their manifest V2 extensions despite the manifest V 3 apocalypse, and brave browser has found a trick to keep manifest V2 extensions alive : brave team has integrated a special section in brave browser settings called "manifest V2 extensions" and brave team has selected 4 manifest V2 extensions integrated by default in brave browser like the famous ad blocker ublock origin !

and so to encourage brave team to keep alive the manfest v2 which is rare after the chromium apocalypse manfest V 3, and in the optics that google will perhaps make the manifest v3 even more restrictive or google will censor extensions .....

we hope please our beloved Open-in-vlc will make in the future a request to brave browser team to be included by default in the pre-selected list of manifest V2 extensions and to be integrated by default in brave browser or catsxp browser because live-stream-downloader is vital essential and will make brave browser more captivating for users especially if the firefox extension has kept the manfest V2 and we know firefox uses the same web extension technology as chrome so maybe the firefox extension of Open-in-vlc has remained in manifest V2 and compatible with brave browser or catsxp browser, because brave is very popular and i think brave could become more popular than chrome because brave keeps the manifest V2 and has other unique features like bittorrent streaming support ......

Hello Mr @andy-portmen , after trying the new verson of our beloved Open-in-vlc with several streaming sites, it works with all streaming websites even with hls videos, thank you very much ! 💯 🥇

But I noticed a strange thing especially on the vidmolly platform and my favorite streaming sites, in 2 streaming platforms, sometimes it works, sometimes VLC shows me an error message....

sometimes it work with the 2 first media players, sometimes it doesn't work , but it works perfectly with all the rest of media players , thant you !
(my problem is other media player has only 720p full HD quality whereas the first media player has standard 480p quality which is better for me because my wifi and cpu are not very strong )

I notice in the new version of the Cat-catch extension, changelog says:

I tried the test sample on webextension.org and it worked fine but YouTube does not, everything launches but vlc won't play video

I'm using mozilla firefox with the open in vlc extension, I want to click on a youtube link and instead of opening the youtube website, I want to force the open vlc extension to open vlc and said video, would this be possible? as i've looked through the wiki many thanks.

We had a client request to use this plugin for our application, trying to figure out how to get it to recognize our video player though as it is currently not. We are using plyr library to add some extra styling/functionality to our video player (https://plyr.io/#video), when the video is loaded in though it is not recognized by the plugin. I can move the video tag out of the divs that are created by the plyr library and it is recognized.

If I manually move the video tag outside the plyr__video-wrapper div its picked up.

Is there a way to implement an option to pick which resolution we would like to stream the video in? VLC is great and all but we are limited to strictly watching maximum 720p quality.

I could install nodejs without issues. But when I check the connection in the plug in page, I get an error. VLC plugin can't find the nodejs client.

Browser is Brave 1.0 linux.
Os is Lubuntu 19.01.
